More about corporate eventsThe Europa League has carried that name since 2009/10; before then it was the UEFA Cup. The first final under the new name was contested by Atlético Madrid and English underdogs Fulham at the Volksparkstadion in Hamburg — denying the home city the all-star tie it had hoped for between HSV and Liverpool.
For anyone travelling to watch football, it is the most rewarding of the three European competitions. It sends clubs to Istanbul, Athens, Rome, Lisbon, the Balkans and Scandinavia, to grounds the Champions League rarely visits. Stadiums are often smaller and louder than in the top competition, and tickets are usually obtainable.
Sevilla are the record winners with seven titles — and have won every final they have reached. The most recent came in 2023 against AS Roma, on penalties in Budapest. Inter Milan follow with three, having lost the 2020 final in Cologne 3-2.
Liverpool won it in 1973, 1976 and 2001 under the old name, Feyenoord in 1974 and 2002, the latter against Borussia Dortmund. Manchester United lifted the trophy in 2017 and Tottenham Hotspur in 2025. From Germany, Borussia Mönchengladbach (1975, 1979) and Eintracht Frankfurt (1980, 2022) have two apiece.
Groups have been abolished. Thirty-six clubs form a single league phase of eight matchdays, each playing four home and four away fixtures against eight different opponents. The top eight go straight through to the round of 16; clubs finishing ninth to 24th contest knockout play-offs for the remaining places. The quarter-finals, semi-finals and the May final follow. The winners qualify for the following season's Champions League.
For visitors this is good news: more varied opponents than the old group stage produced, and four guaranteed home fixtures at whichever club you want to follow.
League phase pairings are known after the summer draw, but the exact evening and kick-off time come later — the Europa League plays on Thursdays, in two kick-off slots. Book flights with a little flexibility. For the biggest ties, home clubs release very little to general sale; ask early and we will tell you honestly what is realistic.
Pick the club you want to follow — see our Premier League, Serie A, La Liga and Bundesliga pages, or head to the Champions League page for the senior competition.
