De Kuip opened in 1937 and was the first stadium in Europe built with two freely suspended tiers. For sound, that design has never been bettered: around 51,000 spectators sit almost vertically above the pitch, and when "Hand in Hand" is sung before kick-off, opposing players are still describing it years later.

Getting to the ground
