Bundesliga tickets and football trips to Germany's biggest grounds

The Bundesliga has the highest average attendance of any football league in the world, and the reason is standing on the terraces. Germany is one of the few countries where the major grounds still have genuine standing sections. If you are travelling from England, Ireland, the Netherlands or Scandinavia, this is something you can no longer see at home: 25,000 people on a single tier, standing and singing for ninety minutes.

The clubs: where your trip can take you

• Bayern Munich — the Allianz Arena, the best attended ground in the league, and "Mia san mia", the best known club motto in Germany.
• Borussia Dortmund — the Yellow Wall at the Signal Iduna Park, still called the Westfalenstadion by most supporters, holds around 25,000 and is the largest standing terrace in Europe.
• Eintracht Frankfurt — the Nordwestkurve (north-west stand) at the Deutsche Bank Park, the old Waldstadion, is rated one of the loudest in Europe.
• FC Schalke 04 — royal blue, the Knappen (the miners) and the Nordkurve at the Veltins-Arena, formerly the Arena AufSchalke.
• Hamburger SV — the Volksparkstadion and a north stand that has carried the club through every season it has had.
• Borussia Mönchengladbach — the Borussia-Park, around an hour by car from the Dutch and Belgian border.
• SV Werder Bremen — the Weserstadion, on the river and inside the city rather than out of town.
• Bayer 04 Leverkusen — the BayArena, compact and a short walk from the station.

Ticket-Kombo or travel package: what you can book

There are two ways to book a Bundesliga home game, and both come from one source:

• The Ticket-Kombo — literally a ticket combination — pairs your match ticket with a sightseeing element on the same day, such as a city tour or a museum visit. This is the right choice if you are travelling in and out without an overnight stay but still want to see something of the city.
• The travel package combines your ticket with a hotel night in the host city. Transfers, a higher room category and group quotes from ten people upwards are available on request.

Both come with fixed times and a clear schedule. Seats together are the norm; for larger groups we confirm this before you book.

Ticket categories: what to expect on the day

• Seats along the side give the clearest view of the game and how the sides are set up — the calmer choice, and the one for families.
• Seats behind the goal put you closer to the singing sections without having to stand.
• Standing places on the terrace are the real Bundesliga experience. They are cheap, they are loud, and they go first. There are no numbered places there.
• Hospitality and business areas combine your seat with catering, a separate entrance and lounge access before and after the match.

Kick-off times: why you should allow slack

The Bundesliga is spread across the whole weekend: Friday evening, the Saturday 15:30 block of simultaneous kick-offs, Saturday evening, Sunday afternoon. The fixture list appears in summer, but the exact kick-off times are only set during the season, partly so that clubs playing in Europe get enough recovery between matches.

For your trip this means a fixture listed for Saturday can end up on the Friday evening or the Sunday. Book flexible return travel, and add a night if you are coming a long way. We flag the dates that are not yet final when we quote.

Getting to Germany

Bundesliga cities are straightforward to reach from across Europe. The Ruhr area — Dortmund, Schalke and Mönchengladbach within a short radius — sits close to the Dutch border and is an easy drive or train journey from the Benelux countries. Frankfurt and Munich are major hubs with direct flights from all over Scandinavia, and the high-speed network will put you in most other league cities within one to two hours.

Beyond the Bundesliga

Many Bundesliga clubs also play in Europe. A midweek Champions League home game has a different edge to it than a league fixture — if you are planning a weekend anyway, it is worth checking whether a European date falls alongside it.
