Ligue 1 tickets: Paris, Marseille and everything in between

France offers two of the most distinctive matchdays in Europe at opposite ends of the country: the Parc des Princes in the middle of Paris, and the Stade Vélodrome in Marseille, where 67,000 people treat every home game as a matter of civic pride. Le Classique between the two is the fixture of the French season and one of the fiercest rivalries in European football.

Football is woven into French culture, and a Ligue 1 trip is the most direct way to see that for yourself.

Why France works well for a football trip

Because the distances are short. Lille is a few hours away via Brussels, Monaco and Nice sit twenty kilometres apart on the same coastal railway, and Lyon has one of the best modern stadiums in Europe. Every destination also stands up as a city break in its own right.

The atmosphere has its own character too. French grounds are loud but relaxed: supporters go to enjoy the match and each other's company, and the intensity never tips into something uncomfortable. For a first away trip, or for families, that matters more than you would expect.

The clubs and their grounds

Paris Saint-Germain are France's record champions and have fielded some of the best players in the world. The Parc des Princes sits in the 16th arrondissement, fifteen minutes from the centre by Métro — one of the easiest stadium journeys in Europe.

Olympique Marseille remain the only French club to have won the Champions League. The Vélodrome, with its steep stands and its ultra sections behind both goals, is for many visitors the most impressive football experience in the country.

Lille OSC have won Ligue 1 more than once and developed players including Eden Hazard, Eric Abidal and Benjamin Pavard. Home matches at the Stade Pierre-Mauroy have a reputation for noise, and the highlight of the season is the Derby du Nord against fierce rivals RC Lens, first played in 1937.

Olympique Lyon won seven consecutive league titles in the 2000s and play in a modern ground on the edge of the city. The derby against Saint-Étienne is among the hottest fixtures in French football.

AS Monaco have reached two European finals, in 1992 and 2004, and the Stade Louis II hosted the UEFA Super Cup for years. Matchdays in the principality are famously well dressed — but against Paris, Marseille or Nice the Louis II gets loud quickly.

What to know before you book

French kick-off times are confirmed only a few weeks in advance and spread from Friday evening to Sunday night. Individual fixtures are classified as high-risk, which changes the rules for away supporters — for Le Classique and the Derby du Nord that is the norm rather than the exception.
