The ground where the 1982 World Cup semi-final was decided

On 8 July 1982, West Germany and France met here in the World Cup semi-final: 3–3 after extra time, then the first penalty shoot-out in World Cup history. It is the match remembered for the collision between goalkeeper Harald Schumacher and Patrick Battiston. Four years later the same stadium hosted the European Cup final, Steaua Bucharest against Barcelona — also settled from the spot.

Sevilla FC tickets: which stand is which

The Ramón Sánchez-Pizjuán holds around 43,900. It opened in 1958 and carries the name of the club president who pushed the build through and died before it was finished. The tiers are steep and close to the pitch.

• Gol Norte — the north end, home of the club's oldest supporters' group. This is where the noise comes from.
• Gol Sur — the opposite end, quieter, with a clear view across to the north.
• Preferencia and Fondo — the side stands, with the fullest view of the game.
• Juan Arza — the hospitality area, named after the club's top scorer of the 1954/55 season.

The outer wall carries a large ceramic mosaic added in the early 1980s around the time of the World Cup — one of the few grounds in Europe you can recognise from the outside.

"Nunca se rinde" — why this club carries itself differently

Sevilla's motto did not come from a marketing department. Nunca se rinde — never give up — goes back to Antonio Puerta, an academy player who collapsed during a home match in 2007 and died a few days later. The phrase has stayed with the club, and it goes some way to explaining its stubbornness in Europe, where Sevilla are the record winners of the Europa League.

From the Reina Victoria to the Pizjuán

Founded in 1890, Sevilla is regarded as the oldest club in Spain devoted solely to football. Until 1958 they played at the Estadio Reina Victoria, also in Nervión and almost on the same spot. The present ground stands where the club has been at home for well over a century.

The derby against Betis

The biggest home game of the season is the meeting with Real Betis from the Heliópolis district — a derby that splits the city and draws enquiries from well beyond Spain. Getting there, and why two nights are worth it

From Scandinavia, the Benelux countries, the UK and Ireland there are direct flights to Seville through much of the year; otherwise Madrid or Málaga with a connection. Seville airport is about ten kilometres east of the city. Coming from Madrid, the high-speed train reaches Santa Justa in around two and a half hours, and Nervión is only minutes from there.

Seville is one of the few cities where the match need not be the only reason for the trip. The Alcázar, the cathedral with the Giralda tower and the Santa Cruz quarter sit close together and are easily reached from the ground.

Two practical points. From June to September it is very hot, often well above 35 degrees, which is why kick-offs are late in the evening. And during Semana Santa and the Feria de Abril the city is full and hotel prices rise sharply — worth either avoiding or planning for deliberately.
