Anfield since 1884: stadium tour, museum and the city of Liverpool

A detail that surprises most visitors: Anfield was built in 1884 — and it was Everton's ground first. Only when Everton left after a dispute in 1892 was Liverpool FC founded, to play in the stadium they had vacated. The Merseyside derby is a neighbours' quarrel in the most literal sense. The club itself was formed in a pub around the corner, The Sandon — today the site of one of the matchday lounges.

The ground now holds 61,276 after the Anfield Road Stand expansion in 2024. The Stadium Tour takes you down the players' tunnel past the "This is Anfield" sign, into the dressing rooms and out to the bench; the museum holds the European trophies. It runs on non-matchdays and fits easily into a weekend — we add it to your package on request.

The city carries the weekend on its own merits: the Albert Dock waterfront, a UNESCO World Heritage site, the Beatles heritage around Mathew Street, and a night out that needs no warming up. Getting there: Manchester Airport is usually the better choice than Liverpool's small airport — it has far more connections from Scandinavia, the Benelux countries and Ireland, and the train reaches Liverpool city centre in about 75 minutes.

One note on planning: Premier League kick-off times are only fixed a few weeks before the matchday, because broadcasters move fixtures. A Saturday game can end up on the Sunday or the Monday evening. Allow slack and choose flexible return travel — we flag the affected dates when we quote.
