The name is the argument: why "Internazionale"

In 1908 a group of members split from the Milan Foot-Ball and Cricket Club. The dispute was about selection: Milan wanted to field Italians and Britons, the breakaway group wanted players of any nationality. They called the new club Football Club Internazionale — the name states the founding conviction rather than a marketing idea.

Blue and black gave the nickname Nerazzurri. And that argument from 1908 still explains why the Milan derby works differently from other city fixtures: it did not begin as a rivalry between districts but as a disagreement over who is allowed to play for a club.

Italy's only treble

In 2010, under José Mourinho, Inter won the league, the cup and the Champions League in a single season — still the only Italian club to have done it. Before that, the Grande Inter of the 1960s under Helenio Herrera dominated European football, taking the European Cup in 1964 and 1965.

Three European titles, a treble and the current Scudetto: walk into the San Siro today and you are watching a club in one of its stronger phases — which shows in how full the ground gets.

Tickets for the Derby della Madonnina

The city derby against AC Milan is named after the gilded statue of the Madonna on the cathedral, and it has a quirk almost no other derby shares: both teams play in the same stadium. Being at home decides only which end you occupy.

The other major fixtures

Early in the season comes Inter Milan against Napoli, and in spring against AS Roma — see AS Roma. The Lombardy fixture is Inter against Atalanta, and the shortest away trip of the lot is Inter against Torino.

The Curva Nord and the San Siro

Inter's home end is the Curva Nord; AC Milan use the south end of the same ground. The building is officially the Stadio Giuseppe Meazza, after the forward who played for both clubs, though in speech it stays the San Siro.

The spiral ramps at the corners and the red lattice roof make it unmistakable. Since late September 2025 the site has belonged to the two clubs, with a Foster + Partners replacement of around 71,500 seats planned for the early 2030s. Until then, football stays here.

Milan and getting there

Milan has three airports — Malpensa and Linate with direct connections from across northern Europe, Bergamo as the low-cost option. Metro line M5 runs from the centre to San Siro Stadio, right at the ground.

For the weekend around it: the Duomo can be walked, roof included; Leonardo's Last Supper needs booking well ahead; and the Navigli canal district is where the evening after a match belongs. Unlike many European grounds, all of it sits in the same city.
