A club founded to answer the north

AS Roma was formed in 1927 by merging three Roman clubs — Roman FC, Alba-Audace and Fortitudo. The purpose was explicit: the capital needed a side capable of competing with Turin, Milan and Genoa. Until then the championship belonged to the north.

The colours yellow and red are the colours of the city of Rome rather than of a club — hence the nickname Giallorossi. The badge carries the Capitoline Wolf with Romulus and Remus, the founding symbol of the city itself. Few clubs state their origin so plainly.

Totti: twenty-five years, one club

Francesco Totti spent his entire professional career at Roma — twenty-five years, from 1992 to 2017, without a single transfer. In an era when that has become an anomaly, it is why his name is still painted on walls across the city.

Trophies here are rare and therefore loom large: three league titles, in 1942, 1983 and 2001. Add the win in the first edition of the Conference League in 2022 under José Mourinho — the club's first European trophy, and a homecoming the city had not seen the like of in decades.

The derby against Lazio splits Rome in two — and both clubs play in the same stadium. Roma occupy the Curva Sud, Lazio the Curva Nord; the home side changes, the building does not.

Roma's home leg is the Derby della Capitale against Lazio. It is one of the few derbies in Europe where both ends try to outdo each other with displays every single year — for many visitors, the real reason for the trip.

The Derby del Sole and the other big nights

The Derby del Sole, the "sun derby" against Napoli, is Italy's great southern fixture: AS Roma against Napoli. Then come the three northern giants at home: against Inter Milan, against Juventus and against AC Milan — see Inter Milan, Juventus and AC Milan.

Quieter but still worthwhile are the fixtures in between, such as AS Roma against Atalanta or against Torino. For a first visit to the Olimpico they are the cheaper option with the same setting.

The Stadio Olimpico

The ground holds around 70,000 and was expanded for the 1960 Summer Olympics. It stands in the Foro Italico on the Tiber, a 1930s sports complex whose marble statues and mosaic pavements line the walk to the turnstiles — reason enough to arrive half an hour early.

One thing to know: the Olimpico has a running track, so the stands sit further from the pitch than in a modern football-only ground. The atmosphere here comes not from proximity but from sheer numbers in the two ends.

Rome and getting there

Rome Fiumicino takes direct flights from across Europe and connects to Termini station by train in a little over thirty minutes. Reach the ground by bus or tram; the nearest metro stop is Ottaviano, a short bus ride away.

Everything else is within walking distance of everything else: the Colosseum, the Forum, the Pantheon, the Vatican. A matchday in Rome is the rare case where the football does not have to be the only reason — and still ends up being the high point.
