2. Bundesliga tickets: the best-attended second division in the world

Germany's second tier draws crowds that most European top flights would envy. What sets it apart is not glamour but attendance, tradition and unpredictability: large stadiums built for top-flight football, supporters who fill them regardless of league position, and matchdays that feel closer and louder than anything in the division above.

The scale of it is easy to underestimate. On the 22nd matchday in February 2024, more spectators attended 2. Bundesliga fixtures than Bundesliga ones for the first time in the history of German professional football — 284,643 against 261,099. In that same season Schalke 04 alone welcomed more than one million visitors across seventeen home matches, and Hamburger SV 951,533.

Bigger crowds than the Championship

In the first half of the 2023/24 season, an average of 28,342 people watched a 2. Bundesliga match, beating the league's own record from the year before. No other second tier in Europe's five major football nations mobilises numbers like that — not even the English Championship, with its 24 clubs and 46 matchdays, which averaged 22,789 over the same period.

Big clubs, deep history, unfiltered football culture

In a typical season, eleven of the eighteen clubs in the 2. Bundesliga have been German champions: 1. FC Köln, Hamburger SV, Karlsruher SC, Fortuna Düsseldorf, Hannover 96, 1. FC Nürnberg, 1. FC Kaiserslautern, SpVgg Greuther Fürth, Hertha BSC, Schalke 04 and Eintracht Braunschweig. Five of them won the title in the Bundesliga era.

  • Hertha BSC — the capital city club, in the Olympic Stadium

  • FC St. Pauli — the Millerntor, and a following that reaches far beyond Hamburg
  • VfL Bochum — a compact ground and one of the league's most intense atmospheres
  • Fortuna Düsseldorf — a traditional club in the Rhine-Ruhr region with excellent international access

Derbies worth planning a trip around

Few divisions concentrate so many regional rivalries: Eintracht Braunschweig against Hannover 96 in Lower Saxony, 1. FC Köln against Fortuna Düsseldorf on the Rhine, the Franconian derby between Greuther Fürth and 1. FC Nürnberg, the Palatinate-Baden meeting of Kaiserslautern and Karlsruhe — and, whenever both clubs are in the division, the Hamburg city derby between HSV and FC St. Pauli, which last drew more than 57,000 to the Volksparkstadion.

Standing terraces

German grounds have kept large standing areas, and in the second division they are often where the noise comes from. They are cheaper than seats and they sell out first. Tell us if you would rather sit and we will book accordingly.

2. Bundesliga clubs are spread across the whole country, which makes the division an unusually varied set of destinations. Rail connections between German cities are fast, most host cities have an international airport within reach, and city centres are compact enough that a football weekend needs no car. Guests from Scandinavia, the Benelux countries, Ireland and the UK regularly combine a match with a city break.
