The miracle of Bielefeld

In May 2014 Darmstadt played the promotion play-off for the second division away at Arminia Bielefeld — and were behind. In the 97th minute came the goal that took them up. A year later they went straight on into the Bundesliga.

Two promotions in two years, from the third tier to the first, on the smallest budget in sight: in Darmstadt this is still called "das Wunder von Bielefeld". The opponents' page is Arminia Bielefeld.

A ground from 1921, on the edge of the woods

The Bölle sits at the edge of Darmstadt's eastern forest. It is small, and for decades it was closer to a sports field than an arena. It has been redeveloped in recent years, but the layout dates from 1921 and the character has survived: short distances, stands close to the pitch, no gap between crowd and game.

The team's nickname, "die Lilien" — the lilies — comes from the city's coat of arms. It is one of the few German club nicknames that has nothing to do with fighting, animals or industry.

The fixtures in highest demand

The biggest draws are SV Darmstadt 98 against FC St. Pauli on 24 October 2026 and against Dynamo Dresden on 30 January 2027 — in both cases the visitors bring a large following.

The Mathildenhöhe: World Heritage within walking distance

Darmstadt has something no other second-division destination can match. The Mathildenhöhe has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2021: the artists' colony founded by Grand Duke Ernst Ludwig around 1900, a complete Jugendstil ensemble of houses, studios and the Wedding Tower, marking the transition into modern architecture.

It is walkable from the centre and takes one to two hours. For a weekend with football on the Saturday afternoon, that is the obvious morning.

Getting there and making an enquiry

Frankfurt Airport is about twenty minutes away, central Frankfurt roughly the same. Trams and buses run from Darmstadt's main station to the Bölle; on foot it is around forty minutes across the city.
