Into the 1960s Nürnberg were Germany's record champions — nine titles, more than anyone else, until Bayern Munich passed them. In the 1920s this was regarded as the best team in the country, and the name "der Club" dates from then.

A great deal has happened since, and no German club has been promoted and relegated more often. That is exactly what shapes the atmosphere: nobody here goes to the stadium because the season is going well.

The octagonal ground at the Dutzendteich

The Max-Morlock-Stadion opened in 1928 and is octagonal in plan — a shape no other German ground shares. It holds about 50,000 and sits by the Dutzendteich lake, surrounded by water and woodland.

The name has changed repeatedly: for decades it was the Frankenstadion, then came several sponsor names, briefly just Stadion Nürnberg. Since 2017 it has carried Max Morlock's name. Search for any of the old names and you will find the same building.

One thing belongs with the location. The stadium stands at the edge of the former Nazi party rally grounds. The neighbouring Documentation Centre addresses that history directly, and for many visitors it is the most affecting part of a weekend here.

Max Morlock was part of the West German side that won the 1954 World Cup and scored in the final against Hungary. He played his entire career for der Club — more than twenty years without a single transfer.

That the stadium has carried his name since 2017 came from a supporters' campaign rather than a board decision. In Nuremberg that distinction matters.

One date is worth more than the opposition suggests: der Club against VfL Osnabrück on 19 December 2026 falls in the middle of the Nürnberger Christkindlesmarkt — Germany's best-known Christmas market, which draws around two million visitors to the main square each year.

Football on the Saturday afternoon, mulled wine and Lebkuchen in the old town that evening: no other German football destination offers that combination in this form. If you want to travel in December, ask early — the hotels go quickly regardless.

Nuremberg: the imperial castle and the old town

The Kaiserburg stands above an old town still ringed by its medieval wall and more than eighty towers. Between them lie the Albrecht Dürer House, where the painter lived for thirty years, and the Germanisches Nationalmuseum, the largest museum of cultural history in the German-speaking world.

And the food: three Nuremberg bratwurst in a bread roll is the standard order, eaten standing up. That is not a cliché but the actual procedure.
