Wolfsburg exists because of the car plant, and so does its football club. The Wolves were German champions in 2009 and have won the DFB-Pokal, and the women's team is one of the most successful in Europe. The Volkswagen Arena, opened in 2002, holds a little over 30,000, has no running track and puts the away end right behind the goal.
It is a modern, comfortable ground — good sightlines from everywhere, quick to get in and out of, and small enough that a full house makes real noise.

Next to the stadium stands the Autostadt, Volkswagen's own theme park and delivery centre, with pavilions for each brand, a car museum and the two glass towers where new cars are stacked. Even people with no interest in cars end up staying longer than planned. Hanover airport is around an hour away and the ICE line from Berlin stops in Wolfsburg.
