Hannover 96 play in a ground most visitors know by a different name: the Niedersachsenstadion. Officially it is now the Heinz-von-Heiden-Arena, but the older name survives in speech and in search — and it is the more interesting one, because it explains what this season is about for the club.

Hannover play in the 2. Bundesliga, in a bowl holding around 49,000 — an unusual size for the second division anywhere in Europe.

A stadium built from the rubble of the city

Hannover was largely destroyed in the Second World War. When the Niedersachsenstadion was built, opening in 1954, a substantial part of that rubble was used — the embankments the stands rest on are made of what was left of the city.

The name has changed several times since: Niedersachsenstadion until 2002, then AWD-Arena, then HDI-Arena, now Heinz-von-Heiden-Arena. All four mean the same building beside the Maschsee, and the oldest is the one the city still uses.

1954, three weeks before Bern

On 23 May 1954 Hannover 96 won the German championship final 5–1 against 1. FC Kaiserslautern — a side supplying five internationals and considered clear favourites. Three weeks later Germany won the World Cup final in Bern with those same players.

Tickets for the Lower Saxony derby against Braunschweig

Hannover against Eintracht Braunschweig is one of the oldest and hardest rivalries in northern Germany — two cities that have argued about regional primacy since the Middle Ages, with supporter groups who have conceded nothing for decades. At the Niedersachsenstadion: the Lower Saxony derby on 13 March 2027.

This season is unusually dense: alongside Braunschweig, VfL Osnabrück visit on 17 April 2027 — two regional fixtures at home, which rarely fall in the same campaign.

The rest of the home season

The strongest opposition comes from the relegated sides and the division's traditional names: FC St. Pauli on 17 October 2026, Hertha BSC on 5 December 2026 and 1. FC Nürnberg on 20 February 2027 — see 1. FC Nürnberg.

Quieter and well suited to a first visit: Karlsruher SC on 4 September 2026 and Holstein Kiel on 8 May 2027.

Hannover: the Maschsee, Herrenhausen and the red line

The ground sits beside the Maschsee, an artificial lake in the middle of the city, and you can walk back into town along its shore after the match. It is the pleasantest way home any German stadium offers.

Worth seeing are the Herrenhausen Gardens, among the most important baroque gardens in Europe, and the Rote Linie — an actual red line painted on the pavement, 4.2 kilometres long, linking 36 points around the centre. Follow it and you cannot get lost in Hannover.

Getting there and making an enquiry

Hannover is one of Germany's central rail hubs, with high-speed services in every direction; Berlin is about ninety minutes away, Hamburg a little over an hour. Its airport connects to northern European cities and to the main station in minutes. From there a tram reaches the ground quickly, or you can walk the two kilometres along the water.
