Düsseldorf's old town is known as the longest bar in the world: more than 250 pubs packed into half a square kilometre, all serving the dark local Altbier. After a Fortuna home match, every one of them is full. Few German clubs sit in a city that handles a matchday this well.
Founded in 1895, Fortuna were German champions in 1933 and reached the Cup Winners' Cup final in 1979. The Merkur Spiel-Arena in the north of the city holds more than 54,000, with a roof that closes and a heated pitch.

Getting to the ground
The U78 tram runs from the main station to the stadium door in about fifteen minutes. Düsseldorf airport lies between the city and the arena and takes flights from across Europe, which makes this one of the easiest German grounds to reach for a short trip.

The riverside promenade, the Frank Gehry buildings in the MedienHafen and Little Tokyo around Immermannstraße fill the hours before kick-off.
