1967: champions with one of the league's weakest attacks

The 1967 championship is still counted among the strangest in Bundesliga history. Braunschweig took the title with a side that scored fewer goals than almost anyone — and conceded almost none. It was a title won by organisation rather than flair, and in Braunschweig they are prouder of it than a more glamorous one would warrant.

The stag that became a crest

The 1973 sponsorship story is more than an anecdote — it changed the economics of German professional football. After Braunschweig's manoeuvre the federation had to permit shirt advertising, and within a few years every Bundesliga club carried a name across the chest.

The club itself gained little from it: they went down, came back, went down again. But they appear in every history of sports marketing, and that is a role no other German club has to share.

Braunschweig: the lion of 1166

On the Burgplatz stands the Brunswick Lion, placed there in 1166 by Henry the Lion — the first free-standing monumental sculpture north of the Alps since antiquity. What you see today is a copy; the original stands a few metres away inside Dankwarderode Castle.

The lion is also the city's emblem and turns up everywhere — in the stadium, on walls, on manhole covers. With an hour to spare, take in the Burgplatz with the cathedral and the castle; it is central and covered in twenty minutes.

Braunschweig is on the high-speed line between Berlin and Hanover — about thirty minutes from Hanover, ninety from Berlin, both served by airports with northern European connections. The Eintracht-Stadion lies north-east of the centre, a few minutes by tram.
