Jürgen Klopp played here, then took his first job as a manager here. Thomas Tuchel followed him. Between them they went on to win the Champions League, the Premier League and the Bundesliga — and both point back to Mainz as the place it started. The club has a talent for being underestimated and then finishing above the people who did it.
The Mewa Arena holds 33,305, opened in 2011 and replaced the beloved old Bruchwegstadion. Steep stands, a standing terrace behind the goal and a crowd that sings through defeats as well as wins.

Carnival, cathedral and the Rhine
Mainz is one of the strongholds of German carnival, and the season from November onwards gives the city a character all of its own. The Romanesque cathedral is a thousand years old, the Gutenberg Museum holds two of the original printed bibles, and the old town is full of wine taverns — this is Rheinhessen, the largest wine region in Germany.
