Some clubs had an era so formative that it still defines them. Borussia Mönchengladbach is the German example: in the 1970s a team played here that changed German football — and the memory of it still fills a 54,000-seat stadium every other Saturday, in a town of 260,000 people.

Die Fohlenelf: why a club is named after young horses

The nickname dates from the late 1960s. Coach Hennes Weisweiler built an unusually young side that attacked instead of holding shape — quick, headlong, occasionally reckless. A journalist called them "the foals", and it stuck.

What followed was the club's great period: five German championships between 1970 and 1977, plus two UEFA Cup wins in 1975 and 1979. Their duels with Bayern Munich in those years were what Bayern against Dortmund is today — except that both squads were supplying the national team at the same time.

The thrown can at the Bökelberg

The club's most famous story took place in a ground that no longer exists. In the 1971 European Cup, Gladbach beat Inter Milan 7–1 at the Bökelberg — a scoreline that had been unthinkable against an Italian side of that standing.

It never stood. Inter's forward Roberto Boninsegna had been struck by a thrown drinks can and left the field; UEFA annulled the result and ordered a replay in Berlin. Gladbach went out. The "Büchsenwurfspiel", the can-throwing match, remains one of the best-known ties in European club football, and it is why the Bökelberg is still a household name in Germany.

Note for anyone planning a pilgrimage: the Bökelberg is not the present-day Borussia-Park. It was abandoned in 2004 and later demolished — housing stands on the site today.

Bayern and Dortmund at the Borussia-Park

The two biggest nights fall in winter: Borussia Mönchengladbach against Bayern Munich on 9 January 2027 — a rerun of the defining rivalry of the 1970s — and against Borussia Dortmund on 21 November 2026. Club pages: Bayern Munich and Borussia Dortmund.

The Borussia-Park: 54,000 seats in a town of 260,000

The Borussia-Park opened in 2004 and holds around 54,000. The ratio to the town's population is remarkable: few German clubs draw so heavily relative to their catchment. Support comes from across the Lower Rhine region, and you notice it in the queues before kick-off.

The home end is the Nordkurve. Sit or stand there for atmosphere; take a side stand for the overview.

Getting there

Mönchengladbach lies about forty kilometres west of Düsseldorf and fifty from Cologne. Düsseldorf usually makes the better base — more hotels, more to do in the evening, and about half an hour by train. Düsseldorf airport is the nearest, and it takes direct flights from across northern Europe; for readers in the Netherlands and Belgium this is close to a day trip.

The Borussia-Park sits outside the centre in the Nordpark district, with special buses from the main station on matchdays. Factor that leg into your timing — it is not walkable.
