A stadium made of wood

The Europa-Park Stadion opened in 2021, holds around 34,700 and is built largely from timber — structure and façade alike. That is unique among Bundesliga grounds, and it is no accident: Freiburg has been Germany's solar capital since the 1980s, and the roof carries a photovoltaic array to match.

Across a year the stadium generates considerably more electricity than it consumes. For a club whose support defines itself partly through environmental politics, that is not an add-on but the identity turned into a building.

Before this, Freiburg spent decades at the Dreisamstadion on the edge of town, familiar to anyone who watched German football on television in the 1990s. It still stands but no longer hosts Bundesliga matches — turn up there and you are in the wrong place.

The club that refuses to go down

Founded in 1904, SC Freiburg have managed for decades what far richer clubs regularly fail at: staying in the top division on the league's smallest budget, and qualifying for Europe along the way. The club is known for unusually long managerial tenures and for an academy that supplies a large share of the first team.

It shapes the atmosphere too. The point here is not to shout the opposition down but to carry your own team through ninety minutes — friendlier than most Bundesliga grounds, and still loud.

Freiburg: the Bächle, the minster and the Black Forest

Narrow water channels called Bächle run through the streets of the old town and have done since the Middle Ages. Step into one, the story goes, and you will marry someone from Freiburg. Locals tell every visitor this, and every visitor eventually steps in one.

The Münster was among the few buildings to survive the bombing of 1944 and has one of the finest Gothic spires in Europe. From the Schlossberg directly behind the old town the view runs across the city to the Vosges.

Then the position: the Black Forest begins at the city limits, Alsace is forty minutes by car, Basel under an hour. Few German cities offer this much inside a radius you can cover in a weekend.

Getting to the Europa-Park Stadion

Freiburg sits on the Rhine valley high-speed line. Basel and Strasbourg are the practical airports, both close by. The stadium is in the west of the city near the airfield and is reached by tram from the main station — not walkable, but straightforward.

The usual rule applies for the return leg: leaving five minutes early saves half an hour. If you would rather not, plan the half hour in.
