Football Trips: Which League is really thrilling?

Football trips and tickets are available for each of the five top leagues in Europe and many European cup competitions. But which competition is the most exciting? The editorial team of event-breaks.com took a look at the standings of the major leagues ahead of the final matches.

We love these decisive days. Pure excitement in two stadiums of the Dutch Eredivisie. On May 14, 2025, on matchday 33, defending champions PSV Eindhoven and record champions and table leaders Ajax Amsterdam faced off in a remote duel.

Decision on the final matchday: Who will win the Eredivisie?

While PSV enjoyed home advantage at the sun-drenched Philips Stadion against Heracles Almelo (4:1), Ajax had to travel to the Euroborg stadium in border town Groningen. Not an easy task.

They had to defend their narrow one-point lead ahead of the season finale against Twente Enschede (May 18, 2025) – and there weren’t many more dramatic twists possible.

Danish player Anton Gaaei must have heard about PSV’s early 2:0 lead after 21 minutes and fired the ball into the net from a tight angle to make it 1:0 (28’). Ajax was back in front. But on their way to a 37th Dutch championship, FC Groningen shocked the Amsterdammers with a 1:1 equalizer by Thom van Bergen (52’) under the crossbar. After 68 minutes, Ajax reclaimed the lead in “De Groene Hel” (the green hell of Groningen) with a 2:1 from former Bundesliga pro Wout Weghorst. But in the tenth minute of stoppage time (!), Thijmen Blokzijl poked in a 2:2 for Groningen and sent PSV fans at the Philips Stadion into raptures.

PSV Eindhoven, coached by former BVB manager Peter Bosz, had not led the table since the end of January, but jumped to the top with Ajax's 2:2 draw and would win their 26th Eredivisie title with a victory on matchday 34 against Sparta Rotterdam.

Premier League football trips are always popular. But the excitement has long been gone this season. Since April 27, 2025, and the 5:1 title-clinching performance against Tottenham Hotspur, Liverpool FC is once again England’s record champion (alongside Manchester United). Congratulations!

Football trips Championship: Who will make it to the Premier League?

In the Championship, England’s second division, Leeds United and Burnley FC celebrated their Premier League comebacks.

One decision remains: Who will grab the last Premier League ticket? On May 24, 2025, Sheffield United and AFC Sunderland, two familiar names, will clash at Wembley Stadium in the ultimate showdown for promotion.

In the Bundesliga, the die has been cast since matchday 32. FC Bayern Munich has reclaimed the title from Bayer Leverkusen. VfL Bochum and Holstein Kiel are relegated. On matchday 34, 1. FC Heidenheim can only mathematically overtake 1899 Hoffenheim and escape the relegation playoff spot (16th).

German football is looking towards Dortmund and Freiburg in the season finale, where BVB, SC Freiburg and Eintracht Frankfurt are battling for the last of the four Champions League tickets for the 2025/2026 season. Dortmund holds the cards against relegated Kiel, yet the memory of the 2023 title thrown away with a 2:2 draw against Mainz 05 still looms over the Westfalenstadion. “I believe Borussia Dortmund will return to the Champions League next year,” wrote Sky pundit Lothar Matthäus in a column, “the team is stable and confident.”

Spain’s La Liga saw the decisive moment in the “Clasico”, where FC Barcelona defeated Real Madrid 4:3 (4:2) after trailing 0:2 – a “Match of the Week” that proves La Liga trips are worth it!

With three matchdays to go, “Barca” leads their arch-rivals from Madrid by seven points – and the 28th Spanish championship is now only theoretically in doubt.

Italy: All a matter of nerves

For Italy’s Serie A you need strong nerves anyway – but this season the Scudetto race is the ultimate thriller among the top leagues!

All over Italy, fans are asking: Is one point enough for SSC Napoli to become champions ahead of Inter Milan? The Neapolitans couldn’t keep Inter – who impressed with a 2:0 away win at Torino after their epic 4:3 (a.e.t.) Champions League semi-final over FC Barcelona – at bay. Napoli only managed a 1:1 draw against Genoa 93.

Napoli’s advantage might be their supposedly easier remaining schedule – away to Parma and then at home to Cagliari Calcio at the Stadio Diego Armando Maradona. Inter's last two opponents are Torino and Como Calcio. The goal difference clearly favours Inter at +42 (after 36 matchdays), the most offensively potent team in the league led by 14-goal scorer Marcus Thuram. Napoli – thanks in part to 13 goals from powerhouse Romelu “Big Rom” Lukaku – has a goal difference of +30.

In Belgium’s Jupiler Pro League, the ten-match championship round naturally is thrilling. Two games before the end, Belgian cup winners Union Saint-Gilloise are one point ahead of defending champion Club Brugge (49 points). 

Pure excitement: Will La Liga Portugal be decided by goal difference?

It may well be worth it, as after the 1-1 draw in the La Liga classic between Benfica and Sporting Lisbon on matchday 33, the title race in the country of the 2016 European champions will also be decided on the final day of the season. 

League leaders Sporting, level on points with Benfica, have a home game on May 17, 2025, against Vitoria Guimaraes. But only three goals separate Borussia Dortmund’s Champions League opponent from city rivals Benfica in second place. The Portuguese record champions will play away at Sporting Braga. 

32 of Sporting’s 86 season goals were scored by Swedish star striker Viktor Gyökeres. He is also clearly leading the "Golden Shoe" rankings and would be the first player since 2002 — and since Sporting striker Mario Jardel — to win this trophy without playing in one of the top five leagues.
