Until December 2020 the stadium was the Stadio San Paolo. Within days of Diego Armando Maradona's death the city renamed it after him — something with almost no precedent in Italy. Both names refer to the same building in the Fuorigrotta district, and plenty of Neapolitans still simply say "San Paolo". If you are searching for directions or old photographs, you will find them under either.
That a city renames its stadium after a player who left in 1991 says more about Naples than any statistic. Maradona played here from 1984 to 1991 and won two Italian championships with a club from the poor south — 1987 and 1990 — plus the UEFA Cup in 1989. For Naples that was never only sport. It was a victory over the wealthy north that had looked down on the city for decades.
The most common is i Partenopei, after Parthenope, the siren of Greek legend who gave the city its first name. Alongside it stands i Ciucci, the donkeys: an insult from leaner years that the supporters took over and made their own. And gli Azzurri, the blues, after a shirt that picks up the colour of the bay.
Before kick-off the ground sings "'O surdato 'nnammurato", a Neapolitan song from 1915 about a soldier in love. It is not a football song at all; it is a piece of the city's culture — which is exactly why it sounds different from a club anthem.
The ends here carry unusual names: instead of north and south they are simply Curva A and Curva B.
We supply official tickets only. Seats together are the norm; for larger groups we confirm before you book.
The most charged fixtures are those against the clubs of the north, above all Juventus — this is where the old north-south story is still most alive. Then come AC Milan, Inter and Roma, plus the Champions League nights this ground is known for across Europe. The wider picture is on our Serie A page.
Naples Capodichino sits unusually close to the city and has direct flights from Amsterdam, Brussels, Dublin, several UK airports and the Nordic capitals, with more routes in the summer half of the season. The ground is in Fuorigrotta to the west; metro line 2 and the Cumana railway stop within walking distance, about twenty minutes from the centre.
Naples itself is the reason many visitors stay longer than one match. The old town is a UNESCO World Heritage site, the city is the birthplace of pizza, and in the Quartieri Spagnoli the huge Maradona mural draws a crowd every day of the week. Pompeii and Vesuvius are under an hour away by train; Capri and the Amalfi coast make comfortable day trips.
One note on planning: Serie A kick-off times are confirmed only a few weeks ahead, because matchdays are spread from Friday to Monday and scheduled for broadcast. Choose flexible return travel — we flag the affected dates when we quote.
Choose your fixture and send us an enquiry. The earlier it reaches us, the wider the choice of category and hotel.
