The Camp Nou as a stage: Cruyff, Messi and La Remontada

Football history was written inside these walls. Johan Cruyff turned Total Football into the club DNA Barcelona still invoke. Lionel Messi played 778 matches here and scored 672 goals — numbers that exist at no other club. Around them the names Ronaldinho, Xavi, Iniesta and Guardiola.

Three nights show the range of this ground: the 1999 Champions League final, when Manchester United scored twice in stoppage time against Bayern Munich; "La Remontada" in 2017, the 6-1 against Paris Saint-Germain after losing the first leg 4-0; and in 1982 a papal mass in front of more than 120,000 people.

Getting to Barcelona

Barcelona El Prat is among the best-connected airports in Europe, with direct flights from every Nordic capital, from Amsterdam, Brussels and Dublin and from most UK airports — which makes a one-night trip realistic. The airport is under half an hour from the centre by train or metro.

The ground is in Les Corts, inside the city rather than out of town; metro lines L3 and L5 stop within walking distance, roughly twenty minutes from the centre. For the rest of the weekend the city needs no recommendation: the Sagrada Família, the alleys of the Barri Gòtic, the beach at Barceloneta.
