FC Barcelona gegen Real Madrid 4:3 – The new ,,Remontada"

Sunday, May 11, 2025, shortly after 6 p.m. – FC Barcelona vs Real Madrid 4:3 (4:2), after eight minutes of stoppage time and a disallowed goal by Fermin Lopéz, everything erupted in celebration at “Barca.” The 2024/2025 Spanish championship is almost certainly theirs.

The Catalan newspaper Mundo Deportivo was ecstatic: “Total madness on Montjuic! Barça seals the double. Dark, heavenly, a glorious ending to the first season of the legend of Mr. Hansi Flick.”

Seven goals in “Barca” vs Real. If you ask me about memorable FC Barcelona matches I had the chance to cover editorially, then “La Remontada,” the comeback in the 2017 Champions League round of 16 against Paris Saint-Germain (6:1, first leg: 0:4), is just as unforgettable as the epic 3:4 after extra time last week against Inter Milan in the Champions League semi-finals.

At that point, Barcelona were already up 4:2, but Real Madrid superstar Kylian Mbappé made things exciting again with his third goal to make it 4:3 in the 70th minute.

In stoppage time, everything could have changed. Mbappé forced Wojciech Szczesny (90+1) into a spectacular save, then the ball was in the net – but again, an offside call, this time Mbappé, who backheeled the ball into the goal from an offside position one meter in front of Szczesny. 

FC Barcelona: The perfect ,,Clásico” record 

That Barca’s fifth goal by Fermin Lopéz was ruled out due to an alleged handball didn’t bother anyone seconds later at the final whistle.

It was the fourth ,,Clásico” win of the season for FC Barcelona against Real Madrid – across three competitions.

Hans-Dieter Flick thus achieved as coach of “Mes que un Club” a feat previously matched by Pep Guardiola between 2008 and 2010. 

The future Bayern coach, who has been with Manchester City since 2016, also won his first four “Clásico” encounters – 2:0, 6:2, 1:0, and 2:0.

Flick started with a stunning 4:0 win in La Liga at Bernabéu, then dismantled Real in the Supercopa de España in January 2025 with a 5:2, and won a highly dramatic final in Seville on April 26, 2025, after extra time with 3:2. 

For the first time in 15 years – with a goal tally of 12:4 – it was a perfect “Clásico” season for “Barca” against Real Madrid. 

“Barca wraps up La Liga and an era,” wrote the Spanish sports newspaper AS with confidence.
And so it came to be: On May 12, 2025, Real Madrid’s successful coach Carlo Ancelotti announced his resignation at the end of the season. The Italian, who won the Champions League three times with Real, will become the new national coach of Brazil.
