Conference League tickets and match breaks

Conference League tickets: European nights in places you have never been

The UEFA Europa Conference League is the youngest of the three European club competitions, first played in 2021/22. It takes clubs to Tirana, Reykjavík, Ljubljana, Cluj, Mostar and Białystok — cities that would never appear on a conventional football trip itinerary. If you enjoy the travelling as much as the football, this competition produces the most interesting draws of the three.

Crowds are smaller, tickets are easier to come by, and the occasion is often far bigger: for many of these clubs, a European night is the event of the decade. Because the finals are deliberately staged in smaller stadiums, Conference League final tickets are in heavy demand every year.

More than the third-tier competition

Dismissing the Conference League as the lesser UEFA competition does it no justice. In a handful of seasons it has ended title droughts that had lasted decades, and it regularly brings well-known clubs to grounds that rarely see European football.

The winners and their stories

The first final, for a trophy weighing eleven kilograms, was played on 25 May 2022 in the Albanian capital Tirana. AS Roma beat Feyenoord Rotterdam 1-0 through a Nicolò Zaniolo goal, ending 61 years without a European title — their previous one had been the Inter-Cities Fairs Cup in 1961, the forerunner of the UEFA Cup. For manager José Mourinho it was a fourth different European trophy.

In 2023 West Ham United won the final in Prague, beating Fiorentina 2-1 for the club's first European success since the Cup Winners' Cup of 1965. A year later Olympiacos became the first Greek club ever to win a European trophy, beating Fiorentina 1-0 after extra time — in the stadium of their Athens rivals AEK.

Who takes part

The field changes considerably every season, and it is consistently stronger than the competition's reputation suggests: English cup winners, Spanish capital clubs such as Rayo Vallecano, Bundesliga sides, Austrian record champions and Scottish clubs like Aberdeen, who in 1983 inflicted what remains Real Madrid's last defeat in a European final.

How the competition is structured

Summer qualifying rounds are followed by a league phase of six matchdays from early October to mid-December. Knockout play-offs are held in February, the round of 16 in March, the quarter-finals in April and the semi-finals across late April and early May. The final is staged at a different venue each year at the end of May. The winners qualify for the following season's Europa League.

Practical notes for a Conference League night

Match days and kick-off times are confirmed only after the draw, so build some flexibility into your flights. And expect hotel capacity in smaller host cities to tighten sharply around a European fixture: when a club from a town of 60,000 plays in Europe, half the country travels. The earlier you ask, the more choice you have.
