Kaunas

Lithuania's second city was European Capital of Culture in 2022. Its distinction lies in the 1920s and 30s: when Kaunas served as the temporary capital, an entire ensemble of modernist buildings went up, inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage site in 2023. The old town at the confluence of the Nemunas and Neris, with its castle, provides the older counterpoint.

The stadium and its name

The Darius and Girėnas Stadium is named after two Lithuanian pilots who crossed the Atlantic in 1933 and crashed over Germany within sight of their destination. Both are national heroes here.

Getting there

Direct flights serve Kaunas, or fly to Vilnius and continue by bus or train in about an hour. The city is walkable, and Vilnius makes a good second day.
