West Ham United Tickets at the London Stadium

West Ham United play in East London, in a stadium built for the 2012 Olympic Games, in front of a crowd that has been singing the same song for almost a hundred years.

In 2026/27 the Hammers are in the EFL Championship, the second tier of English football, after fourteen seasons in the Premier League and relegation in May 2026. For anyone travelling to a game, that is good news. The Championship plays 46 league matches instead of 38, so there are far more dates to choose from, and tickets are easier to get than they were in the Premier League years.

"I'm Forever Blowing Bubbles" — and the bubbles on the pitch

No club song in England is older or more closely tied to one club. "I'm Forever Blowing Bubbles" was written in 1918 for the Broadway revue The Passing Show of 1918 and was brought to Upton Park by manager Charlie Paynter in the late 1920s. The link came from a local school: a young player called Billy J. Murray was nicknamed "Bubbles" because he looked like the boy in the Millais painting used to advertise Pears Soap, and his headmaster Cornelius Beal would sing the song whenever the school team won.

The bubbles on the pitch are much newer. Since 2010, twenty-five machines have sent real bubbles drifting across the turf as the teams come out, with 62,500 people singing along. If it is your first visit, take your seat early — that minute before kick-off is the one you will remember.

The London Stadium — from Olympic Stadium to home ground

West Ham have played at the London Stadium since 2016. It was built as the Olympic Stadium for the 2012 Games and converted for football afterwards. Home matches use 62,500 seats across four stands: the Billy Bonds Stand to the east, with more than 20,000 seats the largest in the ground and named in 2019 after the player who made 799 appearances for the club; the Bobby Moore Stand to the north; the Sir Trevor Brooking Stand to the south; and the west stand.

Getting there is simple. Take the Central or Jubilee line to Stratford, then walk a few minutes through the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park. Until 2016 the Hammers played at the Boleyn Ground on Upton Park, a different ground, now demolished, which held just under 35,000. Supporters still miss it — but the move nearly doubled the number of tickets available for every home game.

The Academy of Football — and the three men of 1966

West Ham have called themselves the Academy of Football for decades, and there is a good reason for it. When England won the World Cup at Wembley in 1966, three of the eleven players on the pitch came from East London: Bobby Moore was captain, Geoff Hurst scored three goals in the final and Martin Peters added another. People in East London will still tell you that England did not win that trophy — West Ham did. A statue on Barking Road, close to the old Boleyn Ground, shows Moore held aloft by his team-mates with the cup in his hands.

London derbies — and Millwall back in the same division

The club's fiercest rivalry is not with one of the bigger names but with Millwall FC, from the other side of the Thames. For years the two were in different divisions. In 2026/27 they are both in the Championship and meet in the league for the first time in a long while. Watford and Queens Park Rangers are in the same division too.

The derbies against Tottenham Hotspur, Chelsea, Arsenal, Fulham and Crystal Palace are missing from the league calendar this season. They are still possible in the FA Cup and the League Cup, where the draw decides — often at short notice.

Tickets and travel

London is one of the easiest away trips in Europe. From the Netherlands and Belgium, Eurostar runs to St Pancras and the Underground does the rest; from Scandinavia there are direct flights to all the London airports, several a day; from the UK and Ireland it is a train ride or a short hop. Staying in Stratford is more convenient than it sounds: the Central line reaches the City in about fifteen minutes, one of the largest shopping centres in Europe is next to the station, and the Olympic Park itself is worth an afternoon — the ArcelorMittal Orbit gives you the skyline. A stadium tour of the London Stadium fits well into a non-matchday.
