Los Colchoneros — why Atlético are "the mattress makers"

The nickname sounds odd and has a very practical origin. The red-and-white striped shirts looked like the ticking used on Spanish mattresses, the sort found in every household a century ago. That made them Los Colchoneros, the mattress makers. Alongside it run Los Rojiblancos, the red-and-whites, and simply El Atleti.

There is a third name, and it says more about the club than the other two: "El Pupas", roughly "the jinxed one". It was coined by one of Atlético's own presidents, and it refers to this club's habit of losing the biggest matches in the cruellest way. Two Champions League finals against their city rivals — 2014, to a goal in the last minute of stoppage time; 2016, on penalties. Atlético do not treat that as a wound. They treat it as an identity. The club motto is "coraje y corazón": courage and heart, not elegance and trophies.

Once you understand that, you understand why a home game here sounds nothing like one three metro stops away at the richest club in the world. Founded in 1903, Atlético have always been Madrid's counterweight.

From the Vicente Calderón to the Metropolitano

Until May 2017 Atlético played on the Manzanares at the Vicente Calderón — a tight, loud ground in the middle of the city, with a motorway running underneath one of its stands. At the farewell match against Athletic Bilbao, supporters walked onto the pitch and took pieces of turf home with them. The Metropolitano is a different building in a different part of town, but you can still hear the connection: many of the chants came across from the Calderón, and the river still appears in the club anthem.

The current ground opened in 2017, holds 70,460 and sits in the eastern district of San Blas-Canillejas. The curved wave roof is not only architecture — it keeps the sound down on the tiers, which you notice most behind the goal.

Choosing where to sit

• Fondo Sur — behind the goal, home of the active support. The loudest part of the ground, and the choice if you are coming for the atmosphere.
• Lateral — the touchlines, with the clearest view of shape and tactics.
• Fondo Norte — behind the opposite goal, quieter than the south end and usually cheaper.
• Hospitality — the seat with catering, a separate entrance and lounge access before and after the match.

The Derbi Madrileño and the other big home games

Getting there

Madrid-Barajas is convenient for this ground in a way it is not for the others: the airport is on the eastern edge of the city and so is the stadium, so you do not cross Madrid on arrival. There are direct flights from every Nordic capital, from Amsterdam, Brussels and Dublin and from most UK airports. Metro line 7 stops at Estadio Metropolitano, at the gates.

One note on planning: La Liga kick-off times are confirmed only a few weeks ahead, because fixtures run from Friday to Monday and are scheduled for broadcast. A 21:00 kick-off is normal in Madrid, which rules out flying home the same night. Choose flexible return travel — we flag the affected dates when we quote.
