More about corporate events

There is no second club like this in Europe. Athletic Bilbao sign Basque players only — and are still, alongside Real Madrid and Barcelona, one of just three clubs never relegated from Spain's Primera División. Travel to Bilbao and you are not watching a club that happens to have a tradition; you are watching one that is made of it.

Athletic Bilbao tickets 2026/27: nineteen home fixtures at San Mamés

We sell official tickets for home matches at San Mamés, on their own or with a hotel. Athletic play in La Liga; the home season opens against Sevilla and closes on 30 May 2027 against Rayo Vallecano.

Nineteen dates in between, across a wide price range: around 130 euros for a mid-table fixture, over 330 when Real Madrid visit.

Basque players only: the rule nobody else has

The cantera policy is the foundation of the entire club. Athletic field only players born or developed in the Basque Country. The roots of that self-imposed limit go back to around 1911, and it has never been abandoned — not even in the decades when it cost them dearly on the pitch.

You can call it romantic, but it is first of all an achievement. A club recruiting from a region of barely two million people has stayed in the top division continuously since the league was founded. Athletic have never won a European trophy — two finals were lost. They have also never gone down. That record explains the Basque Country better than any brochure.

La Catedral: the nickname that moved house

The old San Mamés was known as La Catedral, the cathedral — never an official name, one the supporters gave it. When the club moved a few metres down the road into a new ground in 2013, the nickname went with it. That is rare: stadium names seldom survive a move, and nicknames almost never do.

The name itself explains the club. San Mamés refers to an early Christian martyr who, as the legend has it, was thrown to the lions in the arena and survived — which is also where the club's nickname Leones, the lions, comes from. A ground named after a man who faced the beasts in the ring: few European clubs have a more fitting origin story.

The Gabarra: how Bilbao celebrates

When Athletic win something, a barge sails down the Nervión. The Gabarra is a converted freight barge from the days when the river fed the shipyards; the squad stands on it and the city lines both banks. No open-top bus, no town hall balcony — a boat on the river that built the place.

That is the difference between Bilbao and the grand addresses in Madrid or Barcelona. Club and city share the same industrial history, and both were rebuilt in the same decades.

Tickets for the Basque derby against Real Sociedad

The Euskal Derbia against Real Sociedad of San Sebastián is the fixture of the Basque football year — and unlike many Spanish derbies it is marked by mutual respect. Both clubs long followed the same recruitment rule, and in 1976 the two captains carried the then-banned Basque flag onto the pitch together.

The San Mamés date is Athletic Bilbao against Real Sociedad on 1 November 2026. Smaller regional fixtures follow against Deportivo Alavés on 20 September 2026 and CA Osasuna on 7 February 2027.

Real Madrid and Barcelona tickets: the two that sell out first

Two dates shape the calendar. Athletic Bilbao against Real Madrid on 6 December 2026 is the biggest home fixture of the season, with Barcelona on 28 February 2027 close behind. Club pages: Real Madrid and FC Barcelona.

If you would rather have a full stadium without the premium, take one of the fixtures in between: Atlético Madrid on 5 September 2026, Real Betis on 20 December 2026 or Valencia on 14 March 2027. San Mamés depends less on the opposition than most grounds — it fills up for the routine fixtures too.

Guggenheim, Casco Viejo and pintxos

Bilbao is the city that reinvented itself with a museum. When the Guggenheim opened in 1997 this was a shrinking industrial port; today the building appears in every architecture syllabus, and the phrase "the Bilbao effect" describes what a single structure can do for a city.

The second reason to come is the food. In the Casco Viejo, the old town of seven streets, pintxos bars stand shoulder to shoulder: small plates laid out along the counter, eaten standing, and you move on after two bites. The Basque Country has one of the highest concentrations of top-level cooking anywhere, and its cheapest tier sits on the bar every evening.

Getting there and planning the weekend

Bilbao airport takes direct flights from across northern Europe and sits about twelve kilometres north of the city. The convenient part is San Mamés itself: it stands in the middle of Bilbao, not on the outskirts. The Termibus coach station is next door, the metro stops at the ground, and the Guggenheim is a twenty-minute walk away.

So a hotel in the centre works just as well as one near the stadium, and a weekend covers both. With more time, pair Bilbao with San Sebastián — an hour along the coast.

Tell us which home fixture you want to see and we will put the ticket, the hotel and the travel together.
