La Vecchia Signora: where the name came from

"The Old Lady" was not a compliment when it first appeared — it described a club already seen as established, wealthy and slightly aloof. It survived as a title of respect. The black-and-white stripes, meanwhile, came from England: a club member ordered shirts from Nottingham and what arrived was the Notts County design. It stayed.

Between 2012 and 2020 Juventus won nine consecutive league titles — a run no other club in Europe's five major leagues has matched. It ended in 2020, and the years since have left Turin with expectations that turn up at every home match.

The first stadium an Italian club owned outright

In 2011 Juventus opened the Allianz Stadium and became the first Serie A club to own its own ground. Most Italian clubs play in municipal arenas, frequently shared and rarely modernised; Juventus built a football-only stadium with no running track and the stands close to the pitch.

You hear the difference on a first visit. Anyone who knows the San Siro or the Stadio Olimpico expects distance — here the front row sits metres from the touchline. At just over 41,000 the ground is smaller than the old colossi, and that is precisely its strength.

The city fixture against Torino is the oldest derby in Italian football. Its name comes from the Mole Antonelliana, the tower that rises over Turin and now houses the national film museum — a derby named after a building rather than a grievance.

Derby d'Italia against Inter — and the north-south match against Napoli

Quieter but already on sale is Juventus against Bologna — often the better first visit, since the tickets cost less and the stands fill up anyway.

Turin: cinema, Egypt and the Alps next door

Travellers heading for Milan or Florence skip Turin, and that is their loss. The Museo Egizio holds the most significant collection of ancient Egyptian art anywhere outside Cairo. The Mole Antonelliana houses the national film museum, with a glass lift running up through the middle of the hall to the spire.

Then the cafés under the arcades, where the bicerin was invented, and the chocolate tradition that produced gianduja, the hazelnut paste that later travelled the world as a brand. In winter the Alps are close enough to add a day on the slopes.

Getting there and booking

Turin-Caselle takes flights from across Europe, and Milan-Malpensa is the larger alternative with a rail connection. Within Italy, high-speed trains reach Turin from Milan in under an hour.

The Allianz Stadium is not in the centre but about seven kilometres north-west, in the Continassa district. Build the journey into your plan: trams and shuttle buses run more frequently on matchdays, but this is not a walk.
