The line is Andalusian rather than standard Spanish, and it means: long live Betis, even when it loses. Elsewhere that would be a slogan. Here it is a matter of record. Betis have been relegated more than once and still filled large crowds in the second division, and the club remains one of the best-supported in Spain by membership. Walk through Heliópolis on a matchday and the colours are in the windows of whole streets.

For a visitor that has a practical consequence: the atmosphere here does not depend on the league table. You do not need to catch the one big fixture.

Betis tickets for the Benito Villamarín

The ground sits in the Heliópolis district, south of the old town. It opened in 1929 around the Ibero-American Exposition, then called the Estadio de la Exposición; later it was the Estadio Heliópolis, before taking the name of president Benito Villamarín, who bought it for the club. It is one of the largest grounds in Spain.

The stands are the Preferencia (main stand), Gol Norte, Gol Sur and Fondo. The organised support stands in the Gol Sur — if you want noise, sit there or within sight of it. We will tell you what each category means before you book.

Balompié — why the club's name differs from its neighbour's

One detail says a great deal about this club: its full name is Real Betis Balompié. Balompié is the Spanish translation of football — ball and foot — coined as a deliberate alternative to the English loanword fútbol. The city rival carries the anglicism in its name; Betis carries the Spanish version. The other half, Betis, comes from the Roman name for the Guadalquivir and the province of Baetica. Hence bético.

One league title, and the cup nights that count

The club's only Spanish league title dates from 1934/35 — a long time ago for a club this size, which is precisely why it is part of the story. The nights people in Seville actually retell are these:

• Copa del Rey 1977 against Athletic Bilbao, settled by a shoot-out that ran far past the usual five takers.
• Copa del Rey 2022 — won on penalties, with the final held in Seville itself.
• 2025, when Betis reached a European final for the first time in their history.

The Seville derby

The biggest home game is the meeting with Sevilla FC from the Nervión district. It divides the city through families and neighbourhoods and is among the most charged derbies in Spain. It is on this season: Real Betis against Sevilla FC at the Benito Villamarín.

Home games against FC Barcelona, Real Madrid and Athletic Bilbao are in similar demand.

Ticket only or a package with a hotel

Either works. Take the ticket on its own, or let us put the trip together — a hotel in the old town, in Triana or closer to the ground, one night or several. Groups are quoted separately and hospitality can be requested.

When to travel

Two things shape the trip. First the heat: from June to September, kick-off in Seville is often nine in the evening or later. Arriving and leaving the same day does not work — an overnight stay is part of it.

Second, the city's own calendar. During Semana Santa and the Feria de Abril Seville is full and hotel prices climb steeply. If your dates are flexible, avoid those weeks — or choose them deliberately and see the city at its most extreme.

From Scandinavia, the Benelux countries, the UK and Ireland there are direct flights to Seville for much of the year, otherwise Madrid or Málaga with a connection. From Madrid the high-speed train reaches Santa Justa in about two and a half hours. The ground is three to four kilometres from the cathedral — a good walk along the Guadalquivir and through the Parque de María Luisa.
