OGC Nice tickets: football with the Mediterranean on the doorstep

Olympique Gymnaste Club Nice, founded in 1904, had its golden era in the 1950s — the same years in which the Côte d'Azur was the backdrop for films like "To Catch a Thief". Four French league titles date from that period: 1951, 1952, 1956 and 1959. The club has been firmly established in Ligue 1 again since 2002, and supporters call the team the Aiglons, the eaglets.

Just Fontaine and the other great names

The most celebrated player in the club's history is Just Fontaine (1933–2022). At the 1958 World Cup he scored 13 goals in a single tournament — a record that still stands. He won the French championship with Nice in 1956.

Later the shirt was worn by World Cup winner Hugo Lloris, Patrice Evra, David Ospina and Wesley Sneijder. In 2016/17, under Lucien Favre, it looked for a long time as though Nice might win a first title in almost sixty years: the side, with Mario Balotelli scoring fifteen, topped the table at the halfway point. They finished third — and it was fierce rivals Monaco who took the title.

The Allianz Riviera

Opened in 2013 in the north-west of the city, the ground holds around 35,000 and hosted matches at Euro 2016. Its timber-and-steel roof and the mountains behind the stands make it one of the finest modern stadiums in France.

The derby against Monaco

Twenty kilometres separate Nice from AS Monaco, and that proximity gives the Côte d'Azur derby its edge. Monaco lead the league head-to-head with 46 wins to Nice's 32. "This is not a game like any other," said Niko Kovač during his time as Monaco manager — heated enough that the fixture was called off at short notice on safety grounds in 2018. It is played once at the Allianz Riviera and once at the Stade Louis II, and both grounds can be combined on one trip.

The other highlights

The visit of serial champions Paris Saint-Germain is among the most sought-after home fixtures at the Allianz Riviera. And against Olympique Marseille things go the way they usually do in the south of France: loud and hot-tempered.

Why the trip works

Few matchdays combine so easily with a short break. The old town, the flower market and the Promenade des Anglais sit side by side, and the airport — the second busiest in France — is ten minutes from the centre. The coastal railway to Monaco and Menton is one of the most scenic rail journeys in Europe.
