AS Monaco tickets: champions from a city state

Monaco have been French champions eight times, most recently in 2017, and have reached two European finals — remarkable for a principality of barely 40,000 people. Since 1956 the club has finished in the top three on 29 occasions, and it has won the Coupe de France five times.

Monaco also have a long tradition of signing players nobody had heard of and selling them for record fees: Thierry Henry, Emmanuel Petit and Kylian Mbappé all came through here. Mbappé's move to Paris Saint-Germain for 180 million euros remains one of the most expensive transfers in Ligue 1 history.

Why a principality plays in the French league

Monaco has no league of its own — the country is far too small. Association Sportive de Monaco was therefore integrated into the French pyramid from the start, and has become one of its most successful clubs. It has held professional status since 1948.

Two great European nights

In 1992 Monaco reached the Cup Winners' Cup final in Lisbon. Arsène Wenger's side — goalkeeper Jean-Luc Ettori, future world champions Youri Djorkaeff and Emmanuel Petit, and striker George Weah — lost 2-0 to Werder Bremen.

Twelve years later came the club's greatest run. In the 2003/04 Champions League, Didier Deschamps' Monaco knocked out Real Madrid (2-4 and 3-1, through on away goals) and then Chelsea (3-1 and 2-2). Fernando Morientes with nine goals and Dado Pršo with seven were the competition's leading scorers that season. The run ended only in the final in Gelsenkirchen, 3-0 to Porto.

The Stade Louis II

The ground holds 18,523 and stands on land reclaimed from the sea in the Fontvieille district — built above a car park, a sports hall and an Olympic swimming pool. The nine arches of its main stand are one of the familiar images of French football. It is named after Prince Louis II, grandfather of Rainier III, who ruled Monaco from 1922 until his death in 1949.

Because capacity is so small, big fixtures sell out quickly here — whatever the glamour of the surroundings might suggest.

The fixtures worth travelling for

The meeting with Paris Saint-Germain is played once at the Louis II and once at the Parc des Princes and is regularly the match of the season. Then there is the Côte d'Azur derby against OGC Nice, twenty kilometres up the coast — heated enough that it was called off at short notice on safety grounds in 2018. And the visit of Olympique Marseille, a classic of the French calendar.

Why the trip works

In Monaco everything sits side by side: Port Hercule, the Monte Carlo casino, the palace on the rock, and the streets that become the Formula 1 circuit every May. The stadium is at the western end, ten minutes' walk from the harbour. For all the polish, there is still a decent pre-match beer to be had near the ground.

Tickets and hotels

  • Tickets for Ligue 1 home fixtures at the Stade Louis II, plus European nights
  • Hotels in Monaco itself, or more affordably along the coast in Nice, Menton and Beaulieu
  • Tickets on their own or as a complete package with accommodation, groups welcome

Getting there

Nice airport is 30 kilometres away, with bus and helicopter connections, and the coastal railway runs every half hour. Many visitors combine the match with a second one in Nice.
