Why the supporters are called Phocéens

Marseille was founded around 600 BC by Greek seafarers from Phocaea in Asia Minor, under the name Massalia. The city still calls itself la Cité Phocéenne, and the club carries the name with it: Les Phocéens. It is the only major European club whose nickname goes back to an ancient city founding — 2,600 years old and still in daily use.

Marseille tickets: the two ends and what they stand for

The Stade Vélodrome holds around 67,000. It opened in 1937 and was rebuilt between 2011 and 2014. It is the largest dedicated football ground in France.

The four stands carry names that explain the club:

• Virage Nord "Patrice de Peretti" — named after the ultra leader known as Depé, who died in 2000 and who led the singing bare-chested through the winter.
• Virage Sud "Chevalier Roze" — named after the man who walked into the infected alleys during the plague of 1720 when nobody else would.
• Tribune Jean Bouin and Tribune Ganay — the side stands, quieter, with the full view of the game.

A Marseille peculiarity: the two ends are organised separately and are openly in competition with each other. If you want atmosphere, sit in one of them or within sight; if you want to read the match, take a side stand.

1993 — the night no other French club has repeated

On 26 May 1993 in Munich, Olympique Marseille beat AC Milan 1–0 in the European Cup final. Basile Boli headed the goal from an Abedi Pelé corner; Didier Deschamps was captain.

It remains the only time a French club has won the competition. In Marseille this is not a historical date but a present-tense argument, and you will hear it on any matchday.

Le Classique and the Mediterranean derby

The biggest home game is Olympique Marseille against Paris Saint-Germain at the Stade Vélodrome. It is called Le Classique, not a derby — the two cities are some 775 kilometres apart. The hostility is not neighbourly but a north–south axis: capital against port, capital against labour. It only sharpened around 1990, when Marseille dominated and a counterweight was built in Paris.

Less known but no less charged among supporters: the Derby de la Méditerranée against OGC Nice. Then there is the Choc des Olympiques against Olympique Lyon.

Ticket only or a package with a hotel

Either works. Take the ticket on its own, or let us build the trip around the match — a hotel by the old port, in the centre or closer to the ground, one night or several. Groups are quoted separately.

One honest planning note: Ligue 1 kick-off times are often confirmed only a few weeks in advance and move for television. If you book flights early, choose changeable fares — or ask us first.

Getting there, and what the city gives you

From Scandinavia, the Benelux countries, the UK and Ireland there are direct flights to Marseille through much of the year; otherwise Paris and a three-hour train south. The ground sits in the 8th arrondissement on the Boulevard Michelet, in a residential district — the M2 metro takes minutes. Driving is not worth it; access is closed off on matchdays.

The city carries a weekend on its own:

• The Vieux-Port with its morning fish market, and Le Panier, the oldest quarter.
• Notre-Dame de la Garde on the hill — city, port and Mediterranean in one view.
• The MuCEM at Fort Saint-Jean, the landmark of the new Marseille since the 2013 capital-of-culture year.
• The Calanques National Park on the doorstep — limestone inlets such as Sormiou and En-Vau, by boat or on foot.
• Château d'If on its island, the setting of The Count of Monte Cristo.

Two practical things. Bouillabaisse in its proper form is a multi-course meal, not a bowl of soup — it needs an evening and a reservation. And in winter the Mistral blows down from the north: it clears the sky and makes the temperature lie. Pack one more layer.
