Lille OSC tickets: the most accessible ground in Ligue 1

Lille sits where Belgium, the Channel and Paris meet. Brussels is 35 minutes away by train, Paris an hour, London just over ninety minutes through the tunnel. For visitors from the Benelux countries, the UK and Ireland, no other French top-flight club is this straightforward to reach.

The club was formed in 1944 through a merger, the older half of which — Olympique Lillois — dates back to 1902. Supporters call them "Les Dogues", the mastiffs, and since the 1980s the dog has been the club's emblem.

The Stade Pierre-Mauroy

Opened in 2012, the Decathlon Arena Stade Pierre-Mauroy hosted matches at Euro 2016, holds 50,083 and is the third-largest ground in Ligue 1 behind the Vélodrome in Marseille and the Groupama Stadium in Lyon. Technically it is among the most ambitious stadiums in Europe: a roof that closes in half an hour, and one half of the pitch that lifts and slides over the other. On matchday it is simply steep and loud.

Five league titles and six cups

Lille have been French champions five times, most recently in 2011 and 2021, and have won the Coupe de France six times. Their international honour is the UEFA Intertoto Cup of 2004, won against União de Leiria.

The club that develops Europe's stars

The list of record departures reads like a who's who of the modern game: Nicolas Pépé, Victor Osimhen, Leny Yoro, Rafael Leão and Sven Botman have brought the club more than 250 million euros in transfer fees since 2019.

Above them all stands Eden Hazard. In the title-winning season of 2010/11 the academy graduate scored seven and set up eleven; across that campaign he was involved in 38 goals in 38 matches. In 2012 Chelsea took him to Stamford Bridge for 35 million euros — the first Lille transfer above the 30-million mark. "He has that ability to decide a game on his own," said Rafael Benítez of him.

The Derby du Nord

Forty kilometres separate Lille from Lens, and the derby between them is among the most intense fixtures in France: the former mining town against the regional capital. It was first played in 1937, and Lille's heaviest wins came in 1950 and 1952, both 5-0 against the "Sang et Or". The clubs meet twice a season — once at the Pierre-Mauroy, once at the equally atmospheric Stade Bollaert-Delelis. If your dates allow it, this is the fixture to aim for.

The meeting with Paris Saint-Germain is among the most requested fixtures at the Pierre-Mauroy every year, as is the visit of Olympique Marseille.
