A massive “Derby della Capitale” on April 13, 2025 – Lazio against AS Roma ended 1:1 (0:0) in Italy’s Serie A. This match is undoubtedly one of the biggest derbies in Italy and was our “Match of the Week” at event-breaks.com.

It’s derby day in Rome when the massive Stadio Olimpico is sold out and radiates a special magic under the floodlights.

But it’s also derby day in Rome when you're an injured player like Paulo Dybala at Roma, sitting on the bench despite being sidelined.

Against Lazio: Injured World Champion becomes Roma talisman

The 2022 World Champion wouldn’t even consider sitting in the stands during the clash against city and arch-rival Lazio.

This match also needs no warm-up phase. After just five minutes, former Hertha player Mattéo Guendouzi – trademark: wild, long hair – demanded a yellow card for Roma’s World Cup winner Leandro Paredes after a foul on Mattia Zaccagni, which was then promptly shown.

“We can look forward to a lot of emotions” – DAZN Italy expert Christian Bernhard from South Tyrol was proven right shortly after that scene…

A minute later, center-back Alessio Romagnoli, pushed forward, forced Roma goalkeeper Mile Svilar into a brilliant save from close range after a free-kick cross by Dane Gustav Isaksen.

“The derby heated up in the second half after a slow start, even though Romagnoli and Isaksen tested Svilar’s quick reflexes,” noted Italy’s football bible Gazzetta dello Sport.

Yes, it ultimately took a set-piece to break the deadlock after the break. Romagnoli again, this time heading in from a free kick on the left – 1:0 for Lazio (47’).

Emotions in the Stadio Olimpico were now overflowing – While Lazio fans in the opposite stand waved their giant flags, the next “mass confrontation” took place right in front of them.

AS Roma had a huge chance to equalize in the 54th minute through Gianluca Mancini, but Lazio keeper Christos Mandas managed to turn his header around the post.

Goal-line technology helps Roma

After 76 minutes, the “Giallorossi”, the yellow-red supporters in the Curva Sud, had something to celebrate.

A dream goal by Matías Soulé, whose shot from over 20 meters bounced off the underside of the crossbar and over the goal line, was instantly confirmed by goal-line technology – 1:1.

It was only the fourth Serie A goal for the Argentine who joined Roma in the summer of 2024 for €25.6 million from league rival Juventus

“He’s one of the players who has found his form again under coach Claudio Ranieri,” said Christian Bernhard about the winger.

Will football trips to Lazio Rome in 2025 still lead to the Champions League?

In the 76th minute, former Frankfurt player Evan N’Dicka nearly tricked his own keeper Svilar with a headed back-pass, but the match ended in a well-deserved draw – Roma is now unbeaten in 16 Serie A matches.

Lazio missed the chance to close the gap to just one point behind fourth place and Juventus with the draw.

Still, fans of both Roman clubs can continue to dream of magical nights at the Olimpico in the Champions League

Which home opponents await Lazio Rome in the 2024/2025 Serie A season?

Lazio will first try to mount a comeback in the Europa League on April 17, 2025 in the quarter-final second leg against BodØ Glimt from Norway after losing 0:2 in the first leg. In Serie A, they will host Parma Calcio on April 27, 2025 – tickets for this match start at just €39 – and then the classic against Juventus on May 11. Lazio finishes the season at home on May 25, 2025 against US Lecce.
