Watford play in Hertfordshire, not in London — but from Euston the fast train takes about twenty minutes, which makes Vicarage Road one of the easiest grounds in England to combine with a few days in the capital.

A small ground, and that is the point

Vicarage Road holds around 22,200. Compared with the Premier League grounds an hour away, it is tiny — and the experience is entirely different. The stands sit close to the pitch, the noise stays inside, and you are near enough to hear the players.

The four stands tell the club's story on their own. The Rookery Stand is the home end. The Graham Taylor Stand carries the name of the manager who took Watford from the fourth division to the first in five years; his statue stands outside. The Sir Elton John Stand is named after the chairman who appointed him in 1977. Away supporters sit in the Vicarage Road Stand.

How a fourth-division club finished second in England

Between 1977 and 1982 Watford climbed three divisions. In their first season in the top flight, 1982/83, they finished second in England — behind Liverpool and ahead of everyone else. The following year they reached the FA Cup final at Wembley, losing to Everton. The side included John Barnes, later of Liverpool and England, and Luther Blissett.

It is one of the most improbable runs in English football, and it is why a ground of this size carries two stands named after the people who made it happen.

The night Vicarage Road shook

On 12 May 2013, in the play-off semi-final, Watford trailed on aggregate deep into stoppage time when the opposition were awarded a penalty. Goalkeeper Manuel Almunia saved it, saved the rebound — and within seconds Watford broke to the other end, where Troy Deeney scored. The commentary from that moment is still played in England. Supporters who were there describe it as the loudest the ground has ever been.

Watford tickets and a hotel

You can take the ticket on its own or let us build the trip around the match. Because the ground is so close to London, most visitors stay in the capital and travel out for the evening — but hotels in Watford itself are quieter and cheaper, which suits a group.

One practical warning: Championship kick-off times move at short notice when a match is picked for television. If you are booking flights around a fixture, allow for that, or ask us before you book.

Getting there

From Scandinavia, the Benelux countries and Ireland, fly into any London airport; from the UK it is a train. London Euston to Watford Junction takes roughly fifteen to twenty minutes on the fast service, then about twenty minutes on foot. The Overground to Watford High Street is slower but leaves you around ten minutes from the turnstiles.

The same weekend can easily hold a second match: Arsenal, Crystal Palace and the other London clubs are all within reach, and several Championship sides play in the capital too.
