Southampton play on the English south coast, in the port the Titanic sailed from in 1912, at a ground that carries the name of the church the club grew out of.

In 2026/27 the Saints are in the EFL Championship, the second tier of English football. For a visitor that is good news rather than bad: the Championship plays 46 league matches instead of 38, so there are far more dates to choose from, and one fixture is back on the calendar that was missing for years.

The Saints — from a church team to a ground called St Mary's

The club was founded in 1885 by the St Mary's Church of England Young Men's Association, a parish youth group in the east of the city. That is where the nickname comes from, that is where the anthem "When the Saints Go Marching In" comes from, and that is where the stadium takes its name. Few English clubs close the circle so neatly: in 2001 Southampton moved back to a place that carries their founders' name.

St Mary's holds around 32,000 across four stands. The Northam Stand behind the goal is the loud end, where the singing comes from and the atmosphere is at its tightest. The Chapel Stand opposite houses the away support. The two side stands, Itchen and Kingsland, give the calmer but fuller view of the game.

The South Coast derby against Portsmouth — back on the fixture list

The rivalry with Portsmouth, twenty miles along the coast, is one of the fiercest in England. It is older than most league rivalries and did not begin with football at all, but with two ports competing — a merchant harbour against a naval one. Because the two clubs spent years in different divisions, the derby simply did not happen.

The academy that produced Bale, Shearer and Ward-Prowse

In England, Southampton is known above all for its youth system, and the names explain why. Alan Shearer made his debut here at seventeen and scored a hat-trick against Arsenal in his first full appearance. Gareth Bale and Theo Walcott came through the same academy, later Adam Lallana, Luke Shaw and James Ward-Prowse. Watch a home game here and there is a fair chance you are watching someone who will be expensive somewhere else in a few years.

From The Dell to St Mary's

Until 2001 the club played at The Dell, one of the tightest grounds in English professional football — barely 15,000 seats by the end, the stands almost on the touchline, and a noise level to match. The move doubled the capacity, and tickets have been considerably easier to get ever since. The Dell was demolished after the move; housing stands on the site today.

Getting there, and why two nights are worth it

From Scandinavia and the Benelux countries, fly into one of the London airports or into Southampton itself; from London Waterloo the direct train reaches the coast in about ninety minutes. From the UK and Ireland it is a straightforward train or a short flight. Because four other clubs in the same division play in the capital — West Ham United, Queens Park Rangers, Millwall FC and Watford FC — a weekend can easily hold two matches.

Southampton itself has been England's gateway to the Atlantic for centuries. The Titanic left from this quay in 1912, and the SeaCity Museum tells that story from the city's side; a large part of the crew came from here. Sections of the medieval town wall still stand, and half an hour to the west the New Forest begins, a national park with ponies roaming free.
