Blue Moon: the anthem of the Citizens

Just before kick-off the Etihad turns unexpectedly melancholy. "Blue Moon" has been the club anthem since the mid-1980s — a song about loneliness, sung by 53,400 people in sky blue. If you only know City from the winning years, the anthem tells you this support comes from a different era. 93:20 — the moment a lounge is named after

On 13 May 2012 City needed a win against Queens Park Rangers on the final day to become English champions for the first time in 44 years. They went behind and turned the match around with two goals in stoppage time. Sergio Agüero scored at 93:20 — and a hospitality lounge inside the stadium now carries exactly that timestamp as its name. Eleven years later City won the Champions League under Pep Guardiola, beating Inter Milan 1–0 in Istanbul.

From Maine Road to East Manchester

The club was founded in 1880 as West Gorton St Marks, became Ardwick AFC in 1887 and Manchester City in 1894. City played at Maine Road until 2003 — a different ground, not an earlier name for the current one. The Etihad was built for the 2002 Commonwealth Games and converted for football afterwards; the mast-and-cable roof dates from then. It stands in East Manchester, a district the stadium helped change.

Which fixture to aim for

The Manchester derby against Manchester United is the most sought-after ticket of the season, with the European nights behind it. An ordinary Premier League home game is the cheaper way in. One practical advantage of Manchester: the two clubs sit close together, so a match and a tour of the neighbour's ground fit into the same weekend.

Manchester Airport is close to the city with direct routes across Europe — straightforward from Britain and Ireland, and a single flight from Scandinavia and the Benelux.
