Real Sociedad Tickets 2026/27 — La Liga at the Reale Arena, San Sebastián

San Sebastián is one of the few European cities where football does not have to be the reason for the trip — and is still the best excuse to finally make it. The city sits on a bay Spaniards regard as their finest, it has one of the highest concentrations of starred kitchens anywhere, and in April 2026 its club won a trophy.

Real Sociedad tickets 2026/27: nineteen home fixtures at the Reale Arena

1976: when both captains carried a banned flag

This club's best story is not a sporting one. On 5 December 1976 the captains of Real Sociedad and Athletic Bilbao walked out together carrying the Ikurriña, the Basque flag, between them — at a time when it was still illegal. Six weeks later it was legalised.

Two clubs who agree on almost nothing did that together. It still explains why the Basque derby sounds different from Spain's other derbies: hard, but not hostile.

Txuri-urdin: the colours come from the city flag

Supporters call the side Txuri-urdin — Basque for white and blue. The colours were not a club invention; they come from the flag of Donostia, as San Sebastián is known in Basque. Club and city wear the same thing.

The great years came in the early eighties: back-to-back league titles in 1980/81 and 1981/82, won — as at Athletic Bilbao then — with Basque players only. That self-imposed rule ended in 1989 with the signing of the Irishman John Aldridge, a break still argued about in San Sebastián today.

The rebuild that removed the running track

Anyone who visited Anoeta before 2019 remembers the problem: an athletics track between the stands and the pitch that killed any sense of proximity. Between 2017 and 2019 the ground was rebuilt for around fifty million euros. The track is gone entirely, all four stands are new and sit directly on the pitch, and capacity rose from roughly 32,000 to 39,500.

The official name since the rebuild is the Reale Arena. In everyday speech, and in a good share of search queries, it is still Anoeta, after the district — both names mean the same building, and a taxi to Anoeta will get you there.

Tickets for the Basque derby against Athletic Bilbao

The Euskal Derbia is the high point of any Basque season. In San Sebastián it falls on 2 May 2027 against Athletic Bilbao — late in the campaign, which regularly gives it extra weight. The other side is on our Athletic Bilbao page.

Real Madrid and Barcelona tickets in San Sebastián

Two dates go first: Real Sociedad against Real Madrid on 7 February 2027 and against Barcelona on 16 May 2027 — the latter on the penultimate matchday, which in some seasons makes it decisive.

To see the Reale Arena without the premium, take one of the others: Atlético Madrid on 13 September 2026, Sevilla on 29 November 2026 or Real Betis on 14 February 2027. The home opener is Espanyol on 29 August 2026.

Donostia: a city worth the trip on its own

San Sebastián is small, and that is the point — you can walk all of it. The Playa de la Concha lies in the middle of town between two hills and is widely counted among Europe's finest city beaches. The Parte Vieja, the old quarter, packs pintxos bars so densely that three hours will not cover every street.

Then there is the position. The French border is twenty minutes away, Biarritz under an hour, Bilbao about a hundred kilometres down the coast. Few clubs in European football sit in a city that fills a week this easily.

Getting there and booking

Most visitors fly into Bilbao and cover the last hundred kilometres by coach or hire car; San Sebastián has its own small airport at Hondarribia, right on the border. The stadium stands in the Anoeta district, a few minutes south of the centre and served by city buses.
