The Monte-Carlo Country Club — Cliffside Courts Above the Mediterranean

The Monte-Carlo Country Club in Roquebrune-Cap-Martin is home to the Rolex Monte-Carlo Masters and ranks among the most spectacular tennis venues in the world: its courts rise in terraces along a rocky hillside with direct views over Port Hercule and the Mediterranean Sea.

Key Facts

The club spans more than 3 hectares with 21 clay courts (2 covered, 19 floodlit) plus 2 hard courts. The main show court, Court Rainier III, seats around 10,500 and is named after Prince Rainier III of Monaco.

No Retractable Roof — Unlike the Grand Slams

Unlike Melbourne Park or Stade Roland Garros, Court Rainier III has no retractable roof — rain delays are handled the traditional way. Sitting just across the border from Monaco, in Roquebrune-Cap-Martin, France, the venue carries a distinctly Mediterranean flair unmatched elsewhere on the tennis calendar.

From a Hotel Basement to an Iconic Venue

The club's history dates back to 1893, when the "Lawn Tennis de Monte-Carlo" opened beneath the Hôtel de Paris. After several relocations — including a stint as the "La Festa Country Club" from 1921 — the club moved to its current St Roman site in 1928, built in Art Deco style and officially renamed "The Monte-Carlo Country Club" later that year.

Location and Getting There

The club sits just a few hundred metres from the Monaco border. The nearest international airport is Nice Côte d'Azur (around 20 km away), reachable by taxi, bus or helicopter transfer. Find out more about the tournament on our Monte Carlo Masters page.
