Champions from outside Istanbul

In 1976 Trabzonspor became the first club from beyond Istanbul to win the Turkish title, breaking a monopoly as old as the league. More followed, the most recent in 2022, and in Trabzon that history counts as proof that Turkish football does not end at the Bosphorus.

A ground on the water

The Şenol Güneş Stadium sits west of the city right on the coast, partly on reclaimed land. From the upper tiers you look out over the Black Sea - a setting with no real equivalent in Europe.

Trabzon and Sumela

The region's great sight lies fifty kilometres south: the Sumela Monastery, clinging to a sheer cliff at around 1,200 metres and inhabited since the fourth century. A day trip there belongs to any visit. In the city itself, the Hagia Sophia of Trabzon holds Byzantine frescoes.
