A stadium built upwards

The Stade Louis II holds around 16,300 in the Fontvieille district, land reclaimed from the sea. With every square metre at a premium, the ground is stacked over a car park, a sports hall and a swimming pool, and the nine arches across its front are a landmark of the principality.

Monaco and the coast

The principality covers barely two square kilometres and is crossed on foot: Port Hercule, the Casino de Monte-Carlo, the palace on the rock. Several of the streets you walk are the Formula 1 circuit each spring - the Fairmont hairpin and the tunnel by the harbour are open road the rest of the year. Nice, twenty minutes by train, offers far more accommodation and an airport with wide European connections.
