Ultimately, Leipzig, after sacking cup-winning coach Marco Rose (2023) right before this crucial match, failed to create new momentum – and lost 1:3. 

After that, Stuttgart was in celebration mode. On May 3, 2023, the Swabians had lost 2:3 at home against southern rivals Eintracht Frankfurt. This time was different. VfB coach Sebastian Hoeneß even interrupted his ZDF interview to celebrate with his players. "I need to be in the photo – I don’t want to miss it," said Hoeneß – and off he went. 

Good decision! The coach, who led the Swabians from relegation in 2023 to runner-up in the Bundesliga and into the new Champions League league phase, didn’t want to leave his players alone in this historic moment. Sebastian Hoeneß now has the chance to win his first major title as a coach.

Since winning the German championship in 2007, VfB Stuttgart has been waiting for another national trophy. 

DFB Cup Final Trip: When was Stuttgart's last fnal in Berlin? 

Stuttgart last reached the final in 2013 (a 2:3 loss against FC Bayern Munich) and was also the winner in one of the previous three finals featuring the "Cup Final Bundesliga vs. " match-up – a 2:0 victory over Energie Cottbus in 1997, with Giovane Elber in his final game for VfB.

Arminia Bielefeld has reached a national final for the first time in its 120-year club history. Accordingly, enthusiasm and demand for DFB Cup Final tickets will be overwhelming throughout East Westphalia. 

Half of football-loving Germany seems to have fallen for Arminia after their triumph over Bayer Leverkusen (2:1)… "It’s surreal," said Bielefeld’s goalscorer against Leverkusen, Maximilian Großer, when asked about his emotions after reaching the final…

Stuttgart vs. Bielefeld in the DFB Cup: The third encounter 

No surprise: Never before had a third-division club knocked four Bundesliga teams out of the competition. Before their semi-final victory over defending champion Bayer Leverkusen, Arminia also eliminated Union Berlin, SC Freiburg, and Werder Bremen. 

In the DFB Cup Final, VfB Stuttgart and Arminia Bielefeld will meet for the third time in this competition. 

The first two encounters ended in Stuttgart’s favor: 6:0 in 2022 and 2:0 in 2008. 

A third-division club in the DFB Cup Final is not a new phenomenon in German football. The reserve team of Hertha BSC, featuring future German international Carsten "Calle" Ramelow, did it first in 1993 – and lost 0:1 to Bayer Leverkusen at the Berlin Olympic Stadium. 

In 1997, FC Energie Cottbus, an undaunted newcomer from Brandenburg, played in the final as a third-tier team – and lost 0:2 to VfB Stuttgart, the 2025 finalist. 

The last third-tier club before Arminia Bielefeld was 1. FC Union Berlin in 2001. The Köpenick team put up a great fight in Berlin against the Bundesliga's overwhelming favorite, FC Schalke 04, but ultimately lost 0:2 to vice-champion and double-goal scorer Jörg Böhme. 

How many tickets will VfB Stuttgart and Arminia Bielefeld receive for the DFB Cup Final 2025?

Both teams will receive 24,500 DFB Cup Final tickets each, as confirmed by the DFB on April 3, 2025. 

DFB Cup Final tickets for public sale will be available from Thursday, April 10 (starting at 10 AM) via the DFB ticket portal – on a "first come, first served" basis. Unlike in previous years, there will be no application phase for DFB Cup Final tickets in 2025. 

Tickets for the DFB Cup Final 2025 are available in three categories, priced between €75 and €180. A maximum of four tickets can be purchased per order. VIP tickets can already be booked via the DFB ticket portal, except during the regular ticket sales phase.

When will the DFB Cup Final 2025 take place?

The 82nd DFB Cup Final featuring Arminia Bielefeld against VfB Stuttgart will kick off on Saturday, May 24, 2025 (8 PM) at Berlin’s Olympic Stadium.
