Internazionali BNL d'Italia 2027: Clay-Court Tennis at the Historic Foro Italico

From 5 to 16 May 2027, the Foro Italico in Rome becomes the stage for the Internazionali BNL d'Italia — better known as the Rome Masters or Italian Open. As with the Mutua Madrid Open, the women's (WTA 1000) and men's (ATP Masters 1000) events are played together at the same venue, each with a 96-player main draw. Rome is the last major dress rehearsal of the clay season before Roland Garros.

One of the Oldest Tournaments on the Calendar

The Italian championship was founded in Milan back in 1930 before moving to the Foro Italico in Rome in 1935. The ATP and WTA events have been combined since 2011, and since 2023 both have played an expanded 96-player draw over a near two-week period. Rafael Nadal holds the record with nine titles in Rome — more than at any other Masters 1000 event of his career.

Good to Know: History, Roof & Format

• Historic venue: The Foro Italico was built between 1928 and 1938 as "Foro Mussolini" — right next door stands the Stadio dei Marmi with its iconic 1930s marble statues.
• Still no retractable roof: Unlike Madrid, Rome is still played under open skies in 2027 — a roughly €60 million roof for the Stadio Centrale is planned for the 2028 edition.
• 96-player draw: As in Madrid, both tours have played a 96-player draw since the 2023 edition.
