Mutua Madrid Open 2027: Two Weeks of Tennis at Europe's Highest-Altitude Clay Masters
From 19 April to 2 May 2027, the Caja Mágica in Madrid becomes the stage for a full fortnight of the Mutua Madrid Open. It's the only clay-court Masters where the women's (WTA 1000) and men's (ATP Masters 1000) events run side by side at the same venue – with equal prize money for both draws. The 25th edition sees 96 players in each singles draw chasing ranking points on the road to Roland Garros.
A Tournament With a Colourful History
The Madrid Open began in 2002 as an indoor hard-court event. In 2009, under new ownership, it moved outdoors to the purpose-built Caja Mágica, switched to clay, and added a women's draw. Rafael Nadal holds the record with five titles, Carlos Alcaraz became the youngest champion at 19 in 2022, and Andre Agassi remains the oldest at 32 in 2002. The tournament made headlines in 2012 with a short-lived experiment on blue clay instead of the traditional red surface – scrapped after just one season following player complaints about a slippery court.
Good to Know: Altitude, Roof & Format
- Altitude: At roughly 657 metres above sea level, Madrid is one of the highest-altitude stops on the tour – the thinner air makes the ball fly noticeably faster than at sea-level venues like Monte Carlo.
- Retractable roofs: Unlike Monte Carlo, the Caja Mágica has three stadiums with individually retractable roofs – rain delays are the exception here, not the rule.
- 96-player draw, two-week format: Since 2023, both tours have played an expanded 96-player draw over two full tournament weeks, similar to Indian Wells and Miami.
