Nadal's nine-title record sets the benchmark
Last updated: 29 July 2026
On 9 May 2027, rounds one and two continue — and with every passing week in Rome, one name inevitably comes up: Rafael Nadal, the tournament's most successful men's singles player with nine titles.
Nine titles at the Foro Italico make Rome the second-most successful Masters 1000 event of Nadal's career, behind only Monte Carlo (11 titles) and well ahead of Madrid (5). Every new generation of clay-courters has since been measured against that mark.
Rome has long been considered one of the tour's most demanding clay surfaces — slow, high-bouncing and physically punishing. Succeeding here takes patience and craft as much as raw power.
Close to the Foro Italico, the Auditorium Parco della Musica is worth a visit — one of Rome's most modern cultural venues, with rotating concerts and exhibitions.
