Hearts tickets at Tynecastle Park

Tynecastle Park holds around 20,000 and sits in Gorgie, wedged between terraced houses two kilometres west of Edinburgh Castle. Three stands have been renewed and the main stand was rebuilt entirely in 2017, but the shape has not changed: steep tiers, almost no distance to the pitch, and noise that stays inside the ground. Supporters call it Tynie, and it is one of the last small, unmistakably British stadiums still standing in the middle of a residential street.

Where the unusual name comes from

Founded in 1874, the club takes its name — according to most accounts — from the Heart of Midlothian Dancing Club, a dance hall demolished as long ago as 1817. Hearts have spent their entire history in the shadow of the Glasgow clubs and have never behaved as though they were.

The honours and the great nights

The last league title came in 1960. The most recent major success was the Scottish Cup in 2012, won in a derby final against Hibernian that ended 5-1. Hearts reached the cup final again in 2022, losing 2-0 after extra time to Rangers, and won the Scottish Championship in 2021.

Two European nights are still recounted in Gorgie: the 1-0 against Bayern Munich in the 1989 UEFA Cup quarter-final — the second leg was lost 2-0 — and the 2-1 home win over Atlético Madrid in the first round of 1993/94. Players who have worn the shirt include Craig Gordon, Gary Naysmith, Thomas Flögel and Kevin McKenna.

The Edinburgh derby

Hearts against Hibernian has been played since 1875 and is among the oldest derbies in world football — more than 330 meetings and counting. It appears on the fixture list several times a season, at Tynecastle Park and at Easter Road. Tickets are fiercely contested in the city, so enquire early.

Why Edinburgh works for a football weekend

Few trips combine a ground of this character with a city of this quality. The castle, the Royal Mile, Arthur's Seat and the whisky bars are all central, and the airport is 25 minutes away by tram — the same line runs towards the ground. Glasgow is barely an hour by train, which makes a weekend with two matches entirely realistic.
