A club founded by refugees

AEK was formed in Athens in 1924 by Greeks displaced from Constantinople. The name means Athletic Union of Constantinople, and the Byzantine double-headed eagle on the badge still says so. Since 2022 they have played at the OPAP Arena in Nea Filadelfeia, known as the Agia Sophia stadium after the church in the city they left.

The Yellow Wall in European competition

Dortmund's Südtribüne holds nearly 25,000 standing in domestic games, the biggest terrace in Europe. UEFA requires seating, so it is converted for this fixture and capacity comes down to roughly 66,000. Greek support travels loudly; expect both ends to be heard.

Travel

Ten minutes on the Stadtbahn from Dortmund Hauptbahnhof. Essen, Bochum and Düsseldorf are all within an hour by regional train, and Düsseldorf airport is the usual gateway for visitors from Scandinavia, the Benelux countries, the UK and Ireland.
