Signal Iduna Park

Dortmund, Germany

Signal Iduna Park: A football cathedral in Dortmund, where history and passion collide, creating unforgettable experiences for fans worldwide.

Signal Iduna Park – The Yellow Fortress at the Heart of the Ruhr

Signal Iduna Park, still widely known by its original name, Westfalenstadion, is far more than just a football ground. Opened in 1974, it has grown into one of the largest and most famous stadiums in Europe, with a capacity of 81,365. Its distinctive yellow pylons, which support the stadium roof, have become an architectural landmark in their own right, symbolising the energy and power the venue is known for. The stadium underwent its most recent major modernisation in 2006, bringing it up to the standards of the modern game.

How many fans does Signal Iduna Park hold?

With 81,365 seats, Signal Iduna Park is the largest football stadium in Germany. For international matches (Champions League fixtures, national team games), capacity drops to roughly 66,000, since the South Stand must then be converted entirely to seating rather than standing terraces.

The Magic of the Yellow Wall

The atmosphere at Signal Iduna Park is legendary, especially on matchdays when the "Yellow Wall" — the South Stand — comes alive. It's the largest standing terrace in European football, holding more than 25,000 passionate fans. Famous for its relentless support and striking choreographed displays, the Yellow Wall has become an inseparable part of the matchday experience. One of its most unforgettable moments came in 1995, when Borussia Dortmund lifted the championship trophy for the first time in 32 years.

What is the "Yellow Wall"?

The "Yellow Wall" is the nickname for Signal Iduna Park's South Stand. With standing room for more than 25,000 fans, it's the largest connected standing terrace anywhere in European football and is widely regarded as one of the most impressive fan displays in the sport.

A Stadium Full of Stories

One of the most gripping stories behind the Signal Iduna Park legend is Dortmund's 2013 Champions League quarter-final against Málaga. Trailing 1–2 deep into the 90th minute, Dortmund scored twice in the dying moments to seal a dramatic comeback and a place in the semi-finals. The Yellow Wall shook with disbelief and joy, and the night has gone down as one of the most magical in the stadium's history.

Getting There: Straight from the Main Station by U-Bahn

Signal Iduna Park sits about 2.5 km south of Dortmund's city centre, in the Westfalenhallen district. Official address: Strobelallee 50, 44139 Dortmund.

How do I get to Signal Iduna Park?

  • By U-Bahn: Line U45 runs directly from Dortmund Hauptbahnhof to the "Stadion" stop with no changes needed, journey time around 8 minutes. On matchdays, U45 runs every 3 to 5 minutes starting roughly three hours before kick-off. Lines U42 and U46 also serve the area, stopping at Theodor-Fliedner-Heim and Westfalenhallen respectively, each about a 5–10 minute walk from the stadium.
  • By train: Regional trains (RB52, RB53) run directly from Dortmund Hauptbahnhof to the "Signal Iduna Park" stop, journey time around 5 minutes, followed by a further 5–10 minute walk to the stadium.
  • Good to know for matchdays: A valid match ticket doubles as a public transport ticket for the entire Rhine-Ruhr transport network (VRR) on matchday — no separate fare needed.
  • By car: More than 10,000 paid parking spaces are available around the stadium and the Westfalenhallen exhibition centre. Expect significant traffic and an active signage system directing cars on matchdays — we'd recommend setting off early and following the on-site signage rather than your sat nav.
  • On foot from the main station: In good weather and with no time pressure, the walk from Hauptbahnhof takes roughly 30–40 minutes and is a pleasant option.

The journey itself is something of an experience: the route runs through the industrial heart of the Ruhr region, shaped by its mining and heavy-industry history. Anticipation builds as the stadium gets closer, until the towering yellow pylons finally appear on the horizon.

No visit to Signal Iduna Park is complete without a stop at the nearby "Strobels Bar," a popular pre- and post-match meeting point for fans. It's the place to soak up the atmosphere over a cold beer and a currywurst while trading the latest BVB talk with fellow supporters.
