Atalanta tickets: the club that moved the goalposts

Bergamo has around 120,000 inhabitants. Its football club has knocked Europe's biggest names out of competitions, won the Europa League and turned Champions League qualification into a habit. None of that was supposed to happen, and the people of the Città Alta are still enjoying it.

Italians call the club "La Dea", the goddess, after Atalanta of Greek mythology, who gave the club founded in 1907 its name. Because of the black and blue colours the players are also known as the Nerazzurri.

From the shadows to European silverware

For decades Atalanta lived in the shadow of the Milan clubs, AC and Inter. Winning the Coppa Italia in 1963 remained the high point of the club's history for generations — until Gian Piero Gasperini arrived in 2016. Three cup finals were lost along the way: to Napoli and Diego Maradona in 1987, to Fiorentina in 1996 and to Lazio in 2019.

The breakthrough came in 2024 with the Europa League. In the final in Dublin, Atalanta beat Bayer 04 Leverkusen 3-0 — inflicting on the German double winners their only defeat of an entire season across all three competitions.

A record set from the second division

One of the club's most remarkable episodes dates from 1987/88. Atalanta entered the Cup Winners' Cup despite having lost the Italian cup final, because the winners, Napoli, went into the European Cup as champions. After beating Merthyr Tydfil, OFI Crete and Sporting Lisbon, they went out in the semi-finals to the eventual winners KV Mechelen — by which time they had been relegated to Serie B. Only Cardiff City, in 1967, had ever gone as far in Europe as a second-division side.

The players who wore the shirt

World Cup finalist Demetrio Albertini, world champion Antonio Cabrini, the brothers Filippo and Simone Inzaghi, Giuseppe Meazza and Cesare Prandelli all played here, as did Brazilian Alemão, Argentine Claudio Caniggia, English idol Trevor Francis and German international Robin Gosens.

The stadium

The Gewiss Stadium opened as long ago as 1927 and has been rebuilt several times since 1984, most recently from 2019. It now holds just under 24,000 on a 35,000-square-metre site with underground parking and a forecourt. The stands sit right on the touchline, and the Curva Nord — home to supporters who maintain a long friendship with Eintracht Frankfurt — does not sit down for ninety minutes. If you know Serie A only from the vast bowls of Rome and Milan, this is the opposite experience.

Why the trip is worth it

Bergamo is two cities in one: the lower town with the railway station, and the Città Alta, the upper town on the hill inside its Venetian walls, reached by funicular. It is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the most beautiful old towns in Lombardy. Milan is less than an hour away, and many visitors combine the two.

Tickets and hotels

  • Official Serie A tickets for home fixtures, plus European nights when Atalanta qualify
  • Hotels in Bergamo itself or in Milan
  • Tickets on their own or as a complete package with accommodation, groups welcome

Getting there

Orio al Serio airport sits on the edge of Bergamo and is served from across Europe; Milan is under an hour by train. Bear in mind Serie A's late scheduling and the personalised tickets — we ask for the names of everyone travelling in good time.
