SchücoArena (Bielefelder Alm) – a ground that lives up to its nickname

Almost nobody in Bielefeld calls it the SchücoArena. They say die Alm, and have done for decades. The ground opened in 1926 and holds 27,332 today. Its most distinctive feature is the glass roof over the west stand, added during the last major redevelopment in 2008 — it keeps the sound inside and makes the singing carry further than the stadium's size suggests.

A stadium in the middle of a residential area

The Alm does not sit on the edge of town but among houses on Melanchthonstraße. The walk to the ground goes through ordinary streets that fill up with people in black, white and blue as kick-off approaches. Make that approach on foot and you get the transition from city to match — something greenfield arenas lose entirely.

The 2024/25 cup run

The most recent great story here is quickly told and still hard to believe: in 2024/25 Arminia Bielefeld reached the final of the DFB-Pokal as a third-division club. On the way they knocked out several Bundesliga sides — each time at home, each time in front of a crowd that confirmed everything the Alm's old reputation claimed.

The run ended in the final in Berlin. But the road there created a generation of memories in Bielefeld, and anyone visiting the ground today will hear about it within the first ten minutes.

Practical notes

The stadium lies about two kilometres west of the main station and is served by the light rail; on foot it is roughly twenty-five minutes. Parking around Melanchthonstraße is tight — on matchdays public transport is by far the easier option.
